So when you shave do you shave with or against the grain (assuming you use a real razor and not electric)? I've always heard for the best shave you should go with the grain but I look very scraggly when I try that. Maybe my beard is too soft. Anyway what is it for you guys (and gals I guess hehe).

I start out going with the grain to cut of as much as possible, then I go against the grain to get the stubble or my face will be like sandpaper. I have never been succesful shaving only with the grain, except when I first stated shaving.

Though I use an electric (I know its "cheating" but I just don't trust myself with sharp objects near my neck, too clumsy) I remember my father telling me always to shave against the grain. Something about ingrown hair as I recall. Of course if you've not encountered that problem I guess it doesn't matter much to you.

OK, I'm not actually that clumsy, I just prefer not to bother with shaving cream and aftershave. It is much more convenient not to have to shave in the sink of the communal dorm bathrooms.

On my face, I go against and then with.
On my neck and under chin, I go with and then against
always smooth

I start off with the grain, particularly if I haven't shaved in a couple of days. To get maximum smoothness, you have to go against, but my understanding is that some guy's skin won't take that w/out major irritation.

Against only if I've been shaving fairly regularly. If it gets a little long, I go with the grain to shave most of it off then go against the grain to get it extra close.

With the grain to start, then to give it nice even smoothness finish with against the grain.

Against the grain.
Except for certain areas - then I go both against and with the grain for extra smoothness ;)

Even though I use a Norelco Triple-Header, I still go against the grain. It's the only way to get the stubble..... -kd5-

Definitely against the grains. Provides a much closer shave.
WIth the grain does absolutely nothing for me.

I find it much easier to go against the grain...it often keeps it from ripping the hair out.

Both. First with, then against. Then with again, then against. Many times. Yeah, it burns the hell outta my face, but it leaves it VERY smooth.

BTW, that's with a Mach 3, best razor in existence.

This thread has made me curious.....someone create a thread with a poll of "where do you shave"
a.)i'm ape looking and don't
b.)the usual
c.)the usual + then some
d.)i'm as smooth as ice

hehe its anonymous then and would be interesting I think :)

depends on the area, under the chin always against grain, other wise depends on which side it grows to.

I still have this weird stubble under my chin which is extrememly hard to get rid of.. I use a Mach 3 though and its shaves are good, however for teh best shave I prefer some time. 5 minutes is not enough to do a good job.

Don't shave. Be a real man. Pull every single one out with tweezers...
