I'm intrigued. I went to an electric simply because I got sick of razor burn from safety razors. I kind of want to give this a shot now, though.

i switched to a safety razor a couple of years ago. after getting used to the change from disposable razors i dont have any issues any more.

i use a brush and lather, and an aftershave lotion when im done. blades are cheap, so as soon as one stops shaving smooth i turn it over for a couple of uses, then throw it away

/has a beard, fwiw

love the thing, did not have a beard when i got it, and took a little time to get used to it

Anyone wanna recommend a decent dispensable shaving cream? I want to see what a good shaving cream is like vs. the brush and shaving paste stuff i use now.

As in doesn't require lathering with a brush? I've heard good things about King of Shaves's shaving gel and American Crew's Herbal shaving cream.

Seriously this is a new trend mostly with guys that could go a week without shaving and most wouldn't notice.

Probably, to some degree, it's become a trend amongst people who just fancy themselves as shaving elitists. However, the DE razors are absolutely superior compared to shavers and cartridge razors for anyone with thick or curly facial hair, prone to ingrown hairs, bumps or sensitive skin.

seriously, i have relatively thick facial hair and can re grow a beard quick enough if i were to shave mine. i much prefer the DE to the mach 3 i was using.

as for shaving cream...i just have some cheap EDGE stuff that i got at wal mart. works well enough if i mix it with a little hot water, and use a gillette after shave gel...think i used some other lotion before that, but i couldnt remember what it was or couldnt find it one and grabbed the gillette stuff last time. works well enough.

This was the message I was hoping to give in my OP.

My face is pretty touchy, so when I found something that worked well I decided to share it here for those that have the same issue; I wasn’t trying to force feed anyone or stroke my ego. The technique was a major part of my face not getting torn up, but as in my OP I found I liked the DE better for many reasons.

Don’t really mind if you found you get a perfect shave from using a pocket knife, if it works, more power to ya.

(Also, gave the feather blades a try and they are pretty awesome.)

... DE/method/wet shaving is a new trend? lol, it's been around longer than we have.

This is the reason I switched to a DE. I have thick curly hair and using a DE drastically cuts down on ingrown hairs/razor burn. I still get some, but it's no where near as bad as it used to be with cartridge blades.

I think you are having a problem transitioning between the multi-blade razors and a DE razor. With a DE razor, you don't apply much pressure to your face. You let he weight of the razor cut the hair on your face. If you apply the same pressure you would with a multi-blade razor, your face will look like chopped suey when you are done.

Okay so a lighter hand. What blade should I order? I only got a couple with this.

Thanks for the help

Heh, just decided to switch to using a straight razor instead of my Mach 3. Blades for that thing are still damned expensive and just don't last. I got lucky, I managed to find all my grandfather's shaving gear. Strop, straight razors, brush & mug. The straight razors need a good bit of work to bring them back to working condition unfortunately. The scales on one are falling apart and the blade is duller than dirt and the other blade has a chunk taken out of it making it unusable, but the scales are good. So in the mean time I picked up this: http://www.amazon.com/Parker-SRW-Sta...3165154&sr=8-1 to use while I repair the razors. Probably going to have to get a new strop though as his is looking rather worn, but I'll try reconditioning first before giving up on it. Haven't yet received the Parker so no comment on how the shave is but I'm fully expecting to massacre my face the few times.

I personally use the Feather blades (http://www.amazon.com/Feather-Razor...ef=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1303166225&sr=1-2).

I got a pack of 100 from amazon for $45. They are quite sharp though, so you will need to take your time with them. I would suggest starting out with a duller blade until you get used to the technique. You can probably snag some Derby blades for cheap. Amazon has a 25 count for $5.50: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...R&tag=at055-20

What areas are you getting cut? Jaw, neck, cheeks?

You should be putting zero pressure on the handle while you shave; you literally need to let the weight of the razor do the work (and just press enough to make contact with the skin for under the jaw and other odd spots). I would say try holding the razor at the end of the handle, this will keep you from pushing down on it; I'm bad at that and do it without thinking if I hold it farther up.

I started shaving with one about a year ago. I had scars from ingrown hairs from regular razors and electrics didn't do hardly anything for me. I noticed the difference on the first time I shaved. In a year, I've had no ingrown hairs, mild razorburn maybe twice, and no cuts or nicks. Sure, it takes me a bit longer, but I will never go back to a mach 3 or fusion. I buy my blades in bulk and they cost me 8 cents/blade. I can get 2-4 shaves per blade. I used to buy blade sampler pack so my blade cost was higher, but nowhere near the $1+ cartridge of the major brands.

I shave exclusively with the Derby's now and last time I bought them I got a 100 pack for $8 from Amazon. The first few months, buy sampler packs. You cost will be a bit higher, but it will allow you to find the blade(s) that work best for you.

mostly this. let the razor do the work. ideal angle for shaving is about 30degrees, supposedly. take short strokes with the razor.

with time you'll get better :)

New trend? You sure about that? Straight razors have been around for generations. Sometimes I even whip out my grandfather's straight razor and shave with that.
