Shaving with a Double-Edge Safety Razor

I read it, but a bunch of other posts have something to the effect of "Yeah, it takes longer but .... ". I don't want to enjoy the process, I want to get shaved and off to work!

This is why I only shave once a week, if that. If you can get by with a quick shave with a cartridge then good for you. I can't. It just takes too much time with my face.

I have to do so many strokes to get my face shaved. I shave while I'm in the shower (get most of the bulk work done) and then I do another pass after I get out while looking in the mirror.

I hate shaving and my face isn't even smooth afterwards. It's still super rough unless I go super against the grain and get red bumps + ingrown hairs.

I have such patchy facial hair that I might just get my face lasered one day and be done with it.

If I go Against the grain it's pretty much a guaranteed ingrown fest, PLUS a higher probability of a cut in general.

I wish I could do something like blame my razor or blades, but it's definitely just how much skin is. The most I can do is another pass ACROSS the grain (XTG)

DE takes more time and not as good as a shave as a Mach 3 typically. The only advantage is being able to get a fresh blade as much as you want with the DE. So DE is best for cheap people that do not have an endless stream of income or just generally like the shaving experience.

I shave every day or else it gets a little painful. My facial hair grows fast, but luckily it is easily shaved.

Across the grain is the best thing since sliced bread.

I used to do against the grain and it hurt like hell. It just burns now, I used to be able to handle it. Now it's once with the grain, once across the grain, fuq the rest.

Dat troll post.

OP-read the other threads on this. Also don't forget to buy a styptic pencil. Having started out way back when with a safety razor (and retrying it again every couple of years) I get at least ten-twenty times as many shaving cuts with a safety razor as a Mach3.

I view the rage for safety razors as pretty much the same thing as the rage for vinyl LPs.

Took the words right out of my mouth! 😀

If you consistently get cuts with a double edged razor over your typical Gilette cartridge razor, you're doing it wrong or are new and simply don't know how to correctly apply pressure.

Most are used to the nature of having to press down (with cartridges). There is absolutely ZERO pressure necessary to shave with a DE razor, you're essentially putting a bare razor in direct contact with your face. If you're cutting yourself doing a standard shave (with the grain) you're doing it wrong and it's you're fault - Not the razors.

I've been shaving with my DE now for over a year, and unless I'm being stupid trying to get an extra close shave with multiple passes and against the grain, I never EVER get even a nick.

A straight razor, I haven't used so I can't comment... Assuming you actually know what an actual "straight razor" is. If you think the Mach 3 is better/just as good as a DE razor, then something tells me you don't know what a straight razor is.

Truth be told, I had the opportunity to shave with DE razors for many years -- before the cartridge razors were invented. I may well have more experience with both types of razors than you do. 😀

The cartridges became popular precisely because they didn't require you to be as careful with the pressure applied, the direction of shaving, or the angle of the blade(s). All very welcome developments for those of us who want to minimize the chances of bloodletting when going through our morning routines half-asleep. And it means we don't need to feel "stupid trying to get an extra close shave with multiple passes and against the grain"; we can just do it.

But to each his own...

DE is the only way to go IMO. I don't even use shaving cream or gel. Just lots of hot water after a shower and I'm good to go.

As others have said, if you are cutting yourself you are doing it wrong.

Cheap, Easy, Good close shave.

All I'm looking for. Why fight technology that makes life easier...

That's like saying you crash 10-20 times as often when driving a car with a manual transmission vs an automatic.

You're doing it wrong.

Same here. I think I can shave faster with it than an electric.

I would say of the three, electric is by far the slowest. And the most painful.

Still, how can a DE be faster than a Mach 3? According to what I have read here and the videos I have seen, you need to take lots of short precise strokes with a safety razor. With my Mach 3, I can take one long continuous stroke down the entire length of my face without ever lifting the blade. That has to be faster right? I mean, it takes me like 2 minutes to get shaved in the morning. I can't see much else being faster (except growing a beard).

** If anybody saw that Freudian slip pre-edit, damn. That was scary. **

Ordered the Bevel DE system this week and got it yesterday. Pricey, but my 1st shave was beyond good. I've been DE shaving for a few years and have used lord knows how many different shaving creams and balms and lotions. Only used Bevel once, but love how smooth and fresh it left my skin feeling.

It's not cheap at all, but it's good stuff so far. Literally a day after I ordered mine they slashed the price $30 bucks 🙁 lol

Anyone want to buy my electrical razor? I swear, I've never been tested for the AIDs.

Seriously, I'm all about the Mach3 now and I'm finding myself turning my electric on to "exercise" the battery once a week.

I've traditionally used Mach 3 etc. However the blades themselves are like 14 dollars or so. And no I don't want to join the Dollar shave club!!!

Do what I did, and buy the same razors that DSC does, directly from the source: http://www.dorcousa.com/

No subscriptions. Just order when you need them, and shipping is free over $10. Their Pace 6 Plus is the exact same razor as the top-end Dollar Shave Club one. I'm trying the Pace 7 right now, and quite honestly, I don't find it as comfortable on my face. For the next order, I'll be going back to the 6 Plus. Every bit as comfortable as the Gillette razors, for substantially less money.

They just e-mailed me a 20% off promo code link to pass along if anyone's interested; good through the end of the month: http://dorcousa.refr.cc/2MF8HH8

If it takes more time than my Mach 3 it isn't worth it. Glad I read this thread as I was thinking about trying DE. Guess I'll stick with the cartridges instead.

Dunno. i think what takes time is the lathering. if you're fine just using a canned lather, then there's no real time difference.

and i find the dual edge much faster for me. cartridge razors take too much time to unclog. dual edge, i just hold under the sink and let the blade wash out.
