Shaving soap and brush here. It even makes a big difference if you use cartridge type razors (I use a mach3).

Whatever bar soap we're using for baths.

No. Use a real shaving soap and brush. BIG difference. No cream can compare either.

meh...shaving snob.

The whole purpose of shaving cream is to lubricate the face and hold moisture in the whiskers.

Bar soap accomplishes that for me just fine. If you want to spend $$$ on fancy shaving soaps and creams, be my guest.

Much of the time, all I use is warm water and a razor. No soaps, no creams.

same i havent tried shaving cream and dont plan to

I would not recommend, however, going water only for a straight razor. Shaving soap has its purpose.

If your using a DE or a SE then shaving without soap or cream is kinda silly as it really does make the process alot easier...

Nice soaps/creams are a luxury, which is why many suggest williams mug soap from walmart for like less than a buck a bar, but honestly if we all just used the cheapest most effective stuff things would get rather boring.

As for a shaving brush, alot of it is the romance but it also does help to lift the hairs from the face if used correctly wheras your hand with water or soap won't have the same effect.

Like you I used a DE, and also a HD, have a Muehle on order...for what I pay in gear (soap, brush, razor, blades, brush stand) I am still cheaper than whatever the top of the line gilette cartridge is over the course of a year plus cheapo cream.

though arguably the best shave I get is when I used to shave in the shower with a cartridge....but always hated doing that as it would kill my water usage and my wife would get pissed.

Water

Edit: I used to use some Gillete foam crap, but it didn't do anything and always helped the razor slice my neck up.

Thanks for the suggestions. When I went to the store, there was a limited selection, so I just grabbed something that had aloe in it. I think it was Old Spice.

I use whatever gel has aloe in it as well. I'm not a shaving snob.

Really? I slice myself up pretty good if I don't use the foam. The blade sort of "stutters" down my face if I shave just with water, if that makes sense.

I used to use just hot water and blades but since switching over to a electric shaver I usually do it after a shower but I can do it dry to.

Once your skin gets used to it you have no problems shaving dry.
