Shattered my old MPG record

On the way home from our week vacation in Portland, I shattered my old record of 78.2MPG over ~800 miles. Here are some highlights from the trip. 🙂

Have I mentioned that I love my car? 😉 I wasn't able to get MIMA before the trip. I also have no other mods. I'm excited to get MIMA and see what other MPG enhancing things I can do. I'm shooting for 90MPG on next year's trip. 😀

🙂

Here are the stats from the drive:

Max Speed: 96.44MPH
Average Moving Speed: 52.47MPH
Elevation Gain: 50,805ft
Max Elevation: 8,413ft
Min Elevation: 59ft
Min Grade: -7.4%
Max Grade: 10.2%

We were stopped more than we would have liked. I had to sleep for a bit, and then we got stuck behind a pretty bad semi-truck accident on a pass that took 4 hours to clear. Then we were stopped for over an hour in the middle of the Utah desert due to construction. That was fun.

Grats. Just wait until it gets addictive.

I had a two week stretch in late June where my cumulative mileage stayed above 90mpg, roughly 400 miles or so.

I get 12mpg but my vehicle is fun!
.

The Insight is actually pretty fun to drive. 🙂 Sure, it isn't the fastest thing on the planet, but it feels fast because of it's good torque curve(91ftlbs from 2,000RPM). It's small and extremely light. It handles acceptably due to it's size, but could be better overall.

It's definitely a more interesting car to drive than most other cars.

That don't mean shit. The real number is take how many miles you've driven and divide the # of gallons to fill the car up.

They calculation on the car is always overly optimistic. No matter what car it is.

Usually optimistic. Usually mine shows ~2 mpg over what I actually get for the tank (usually shows 29 and I get 27). But for a few tanks, it showed 27 mpg, and I got a little over 30. But yeah, those things aren't usually very accurate (mine showing ~7% error).

You went 96mph in an insight?

Fuck, and you guys call me wrecklessly bad driver...

Anyway, I am envious. My civic barely gets 30mpg most of the time. I do a lot of city driving though. I hardly ever get more than a few miles(like 5 miles tops) on a freeway before I have to go into more city stuff.

All well. You have something that only fits you and one passenger. :/ I've had plenty of occasions where I needed more than that.

Btw, I doubt your insight is really as fun to drive as you make it out to be.

So was 96MPH like flat-out pedal to the metal?.

I'll post my gas receipts later. The Insight's fuel consumption display is extremely accurate; It's typically low in the ~50MPG range, spot on in the ~70MPG range and a little optimistic in the ~80MPG range. The numbers should be within a couple percent.

96MPH was down an extremely long, large hill somewhere in Nevada. The speed limit was 75MPH, so I don't feel very bad. 😛

Yeah, that's the only thing that sucks, the lack of room. It takes some creativity to get all our stuff in there.. lol

It's a 5 speed manual, so you're in control. It's as fun to drive as you want it to be. It's not a Porsche, but it isn't a Geo with a 3 speed automatic either. I think you would be pleasantly surprised.

average speed 54mph... so you drove 1200 miles at 55mph... want a cookie?

I've made detroit-nyc trips in 8 hours, average speed north of the limit and 29mpg (V8 CLK...that car has awesome gearing for the highway). Smile on my face the whole time.

No, Insight mpg gauges are actually very accurate. In fact the higher the mpg reading the less optimistic they are. I just filled up yesterday ... mpg gauge read 73 point something for 750 miles ..... actual mpg based on fill up was just over 75 mpg.

When you drop below the 50 mpg range they swing the other way ..... it might show 48 when you actually got 46.

Most likely due to construction and congestion as he mentioned.

But otherwise what is the issue with taking your time and rushing while on vacation? I'm planning a trip in early August with my son. We'll go from ID to Southern OR, south to the bay area, back in and through Yosemite. Through Vegas to the Grand Canyon, then back north to home. My intention is to take scenic back highways when possible. Most likely my average speed will be in the 55ish range. Since I bought this car 3 years ago and started taking back roads when ever possible driving has became more relaxing than before. It is actually enjoyable again.

Quit trolling.

Step on the pedal more, and maybe you can break the 30mph barrier? :hmm:

Don't you have a civic? The Insight probably has more torque than your car at lower RPMs anyway. Don't agree? I have an old Prelude that is fun to drive, but definitely lacks low-torque power. If he enjoys driving his Insight, then let him have his fun. Different people like different cars, and you can't argue that the Insight isn't unique.

Reality distortion field in full effect I see... imagine how you'd feel if you take back roads in something that's actually fun to drive.

I have no problems with hybrids, but use them for what they are : A-B appliances that minimize gasoline consumption, not a freaking lifestyle aid.

You buy a hybrid, drive 20mph slower than before to get a big digit on the dash and then tell yourself you're just more relaxed/more progressive than before.

Halik either you're trolling or you just don't get it. Not all people have the same idea of what is exciting. I like light and torquey, that is what the Insight is. On top of that I drive a car that can get excellent mpgs, again a personal choice. Not a knock against someone who drives something otherwise. This car isn't for everyone and I would never push that on anyone.

You on the other hand come in here and tell us we drive to slow, that our cars aren't fun to drive, then call us smug ...... just wow. Take a look in the mirror.

Hardly trolling, just trying to dispel some of the prius forum nonsense. (Remember the thread where people were racing Priii 0-10mph, because of mad torque yo?)

Well for one, base 01-05 civic is lighter and has more torque than the Insight. That's not to say that the Insight is a bad car, but it certainly isn't anywhere near superlight/torqy fun car. The car was designed to minimize gas consumption, which is great, but that's it.

But more to the point, driving it like an old white lady going to church and then proceeding to circlejerk about a big MPG number completely defeats the point. Not to mention that the hybrid doesn't really have an advantage on the highway - it turns the insight into a civic with filled-in grille, skinny tires and 400Lb of batteries in the trunk.

Get your facts straight. Even the Civic Si from 2002-2005 had only ~130ft/lbs of torque @ 5000rpm. I torque curve of the insight is pretty good, and is probably better than the Si at low RPMs (I don't have the torque curve handy, but I would bet they are similar at 2000-3000rpms. The Insight is no sports car, but its better than you are giving it credit for.

Hybrid owners that shove their MPGs in your face and pretend to be better than others get on my nerves, but IMHO the OP isn't doing this. Stop the trolling and the hate in the thread...if you hate hybrids that much, you are no better than the "Prius Smugs"...

A friend of mine had an Insight years back - I was surprised at the low-end grunt that it had. I didn't drive it, but from what I remember it's certainly more than tolerable unless you're looking for a sports car (and if that's the case, you wouldn't get one anyway).

The numbers I found were 10.4 seconds to 60 and 1/4 in 17.7. Definitely not a rocket, but adequate for the vast majority of people.

Hahah perfect!

Don't make assumptions.

The Insight MKI is 1800 lbs and is mostly aluminum construction. More than 600 lbs lighter than the lightest Civic. The Insight MKII is closer to 2800 lbs and is of steel construction .... apples and oranges.

As far as batteries, 50lbs ..... mine has been modded, so it is at 100 lbs.

Here is some spec data from the very first turboed Insight ever. His car was turboed around 70,000 miles, he is now at 270k miles after 7 - 8 years.

PERFORMANCE TESTING;

Vehicle Data:
2001 Honda Insight, 5 Speed, 69,000 mi. and a IHI-RHB-32 Turbocharger Installed.

Note:
All testing were done using the Gtech Pro Competition Meter.
No “burnouts” or “speed shifting” were done to obtain a valid readout from the meter.
Three runs were conducted then “averaged”, plus (ONE run at 0-100)
Turbo and IMA at full use.

0 to 60 in 9.023 sec.
¼ mile in 17.103 sec. @ 87.674 mph.
(0-100 in 21.206 sec.)

The following tests were done to simulate passing.
Timing was done with a digital stop watch.

Testing was done under the following circumstances:

Test done on same section of roadway and same direction. (West to East)
Acceleration was started at app. 2,000 rpm (Max. HP of IMA assist)

Time………………………2 PM -3:30 PM
Driver Weight…………….175 Pounds
(No Passenger)
Elevation………………….2,460 FT.
Air Temperature………….72 Degrees(+/-3)
Wind Speed……………….None
Wind Direction……………DNA
Humidity………………….Not Measured (Minimal)

All tests were done 3 times then “averaged”.
Gear used min MPH max. MPH Time
3rd 35 80 14.51 sec.
4th 45 80 15.74 sec.
5th 55 80 17.48 sec.

Remarks:
No performance figures for a standard Insight were available for Comparison.
Maximum HP read on all tests was 97.9 @ 5500 RPM (Shift Point)
Torque reading was not obtainable due to glitch in meter. (Kept showing RPM @753)
