Shattered Asus 1005HAB netbook screen, successful replacement

last time i tried this on a dell, it was a disaster. i got it installed fine, but it was impossible to find a screen that matched the specific motherboard i had.

this time, my netbook screen broke. it fell off the bed, flipped upside down and the screen slipped right between the matress and the bedframe. the resulting twisting action broke the glass inside, ruining the screen entirely-

well, it was late wednesday night, about 9pm and all i had was a treo pro cellphone. opera 10 wouldnt allow me to order off ebay via paypal, but the built in ie browser did. i got the screen today, saturday, at noon. NY to IL, not bad at all. $70 shipped

this new screen is matte. this netbook came with glossy, and i dont know why people like that. i always hated the glare during the daytime, so if theres any saving grace to this expensive accident its a better netbook now.

sorry for the cellphone pics....

thanks. anything i can do with the old broken one? feasible to at least take out the led strips and use them for something?

thanks! looks like i would have saved about $10 if i used that store....

screen has been working great though. i forget i even did this, it all happened so quickly and painlessly...

coworker of mine bought a 1920x1080p screen online for a thinkpad W series.

it is the only way to get a matte screen on that somehow, since apparently the stock screen at 1080p is glossy.

he popped out the stock 1600x900 matte screen and was up to 1920x1080 in about an hour.

i wish someone made a database to show exactly which screens worked in which laptops as i think they are mostly LVDS and fairly standardish now. would be nice to be able to upgrade more laptop screens

yeah i dont see why they cant make the brackets a standard hole dimensions like the VESA standards for mounts. they would have to make the backlight control standard too, but that wouldnt be hard either. i would love to put a higher res screen in my netbook. (1024x600)

this matte screen is great too. today in the sunlight coming through the window, you can see a ton of glare on the glossy bezel, but the screen looks clear as a bell. BIG difference, and it doesnt effect image quality... again im not sure what why people like glossy

Good job.
Now try dismantling a screen and seperating the optical layers to dry them out when a fish tank explodes and floods out a laptop.

I managed to fix my GF's screen using this method. Swapping panels is easy work. disassembling them and putting them back together is a whole different ball game. But in doing so, it amazes me how people can figure out how to design things like this and they are so cheap.

for $70 you could probably buy a used netbook

no way. this one i have cost $160 used, and that was before i bought ram and a faster HDD for it.

Good job.

yeah screw all that. id try it if i couldnt find a used screen, but i dont have the place to do something like that (apartment living for now). i also appreciate how they accomplish so much for so little cost... people love to say how netbooks and notebooks are built so horribly, but theyre really not
