1969Z28 et al.

The asbestos scare was also a load of crap. There are two types of asbestos. The one that is actually harmful to humans was almost exclusively used in ship building. More millions or billions of dollars wasted in useless asbestos 'abatements'. And another useful material pout out of use by junk science--just like Freon.
I suppose you still believe that the problems from Love Canal were caused by big business rather than goverment screwup as usual. Well you need to do some research and pull your head(s) out.

The Quadra's work fine vs a Hepa, but keep in mind, the YYY or ZZZ codes are refurbs and don't cary the normal warranty...

I'm sure that the lung cancer you will get from the ozone will offset the miraculous lack of asthma/hearing loss. Rule one of taking care of yourself around hazardous substances: Thou shalt not pump electrically active substances(be they strong acids, bases, ozone, etc) into your body. Ozone is not responsible in any way for elevation sickness, but it is the reason that if you go up to, say, mt Mitchell(highest peak east of mississipi), you find yourself in a dead forest from 1000 feet below the top. Ozone is poisonous and as any gas that leaves an electron behind in your lungs(uses your lungs as a catalyst to reverse the process that blew them through the purifyer), is cancerous. Miles up in the air, it absorbs radiation that would otherwise hit us, but any direct contact with ozone is dangerous. I looked into using a quadra for silent case cooling, but any intake would either corrode or short(relatively unlikely) the circuits in my motherboard.

BTW: All ionic breeze products(air purifiers that work without moving parts) take negative ions in the air and pulse electricity to combine them into O3. THEY ALL EMIT OZONE, I REPEAT.

The refurb units still get the 3 year warranty when bought directly from Sharper Image. At least the YYYs do, ZZZs might not. But read the individual pages because it says on the item page what the warranty is.

Yes, we know. But not enough to do any damage unless you suck on the thing all day long and directly inhale the air that passes through.

Ozone is definitely not beneficial to health. To preach otherwise is to be like the ostrich with its head in the sand. It has been mentioned at health sites, but the EPA has the best comprehensive webpages on it so I will mention the webpages here (click to go to websites). It's unfortunate that the Ionic makes so much ozone as it is such a pretty design. Oh well, maybe one day a PC can be made to fit inside an Ionic case with its silent cooling.
  • Ground level Ozone versus Tropospheric (high up atmosphere) Ozone describes the differences between good ozone (the one high up in the atmosphere) and bad ozone (ground level smog component). Ozone (O3) is highly-reactive and results in free radical formation (bad for you). Repeated exposure to ozone pollution may cause permanent damage to the lungs. A separate medical website reported a study that showed an immediate drop of 2% to 4% arterial capacity in the lungs. Yeah, yeah, people will say no big deal, I gots plenty of lungs, but they are missing the point that it does have both short and long term negative effects on health.
  • Ozone Generators as Air Cleaners presents a lot of background info about ozone in general besides describing ozone generators used as air cleaners. The Ionic is not strictly an ozone generator because it also does something else (limited electrostatic collection of small-particle pollutants) but it does generate a lot of ozone (you can smell it easily).
  • American Lung Association - Ground Level Ozone Affects the Body Negatively presents some search result links to ozone articles and its effects on your health.
  • The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) list of certified air cleaners has developed an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved standard for portable air cleaners (ANSI/AHAM Standard AC-1-1988)25 and provides certification tests to verify that an air cleaner meets the ANSI air cleaning standard. This standard may be useful in estimating the effectiveness of portable air cleaners. The Ionic Breeze is not listed as being certified. Under this standard, room air cleaner effectiveness is rated by a clean air delivery rate (CADR) for each of three particle types in indoor air: tobacco smoke, dust, and pollen. As for ANSI standards, yes, you can buy something that doesn't meet ANSI certification and it may still work fine for you. The FTC and EPA accept this ANSI standard as an air cleaning performance standard.

Other background info on air cleaning:

American Lung Association - Types of Air Cleaning Processes indicates that HEPA is certainly better than the Ionic approach to air cleaning.

EPA - Residential Air Cleaning Devices presents a number of factors to consider when choosing an air cleaner for residential use.

Why do people keep preaching about how bad ozone is? We all know it's bad. We all also know (or at least those of us that have read anything about the Ionic Breezes) that they are NOT Ozone Generators.

If you don't like the product because you've used it and it didn't seem to work wel for you, then by all means, post your findings. But don't just go spouting off facts about the evils of O3 when you don't really understand what you are talking about.

Since many people can't seem to find it on their own, here's an excerpt from the FAQ at sharperimage.com

Is the Ionic Breeze GP or Quadra an ozone generator?

No, they are not. An ozone generator is a device specifically designed to produce large amounts of ozone as its primary method of treating and removing odors from indoor air. The EPA regards such ozone generators as unsafe for home use. The Ionic Breeze GP and Quadra, in contrast, release only small, trace amounts of ozone ? sufficient to eliminate many common household odors but insufficient to cause any concern. Because this amount is so small and incidental, Ionic Breeze Silent Air Purifiers are considered not to be ozone generators. Ionic Breeze GP and Quadra are electrostatic air cleaners that meet all government standards for safety, including ozone release.
