Even though this is an auction it is still pretty hot..

Sharper Image Design's? Ionic Breeze® Quadra? Silent Air Purifier offers an array of compelling features that has made it our most popular product ? silent operation; efficient air cleaning and odor reduction; no replacement filters; ultra-low energy use; and lightweight housing with an attractive, discreet profile. This efficient electrostatic air cleaner traps airborne particulates on a stainless steel collection grid, so there are no filters to replace, ever! The only maintenance is to occasionally slide out the collection grid and wipe it clean with a damp cloth or paper towel.

"The 7 reasons why I think you?ll really like the
Ionic Breeze® Quadra?"

By Richard Thalheimer

"Friends always ask me if our best-selling Ionic Breeze® Quadra? is as great as we say it is, and if I really use one in my own home. The answer to both questions is an emphatic "Yes!" and here's why:
It?s silent! There isn?t any other air cleaner like it on the market. Others claim to be "quiet" but there simply are no other air purifiers that move air in total silence. Ours uses patented Zenion Effect? technology to circulate air electronically ? without a noisy fan.

No filters to replace! You?ll never buy or change a filter again. There?s no other quality air purifier that traps airborne particulates on easily cleaned stainless steel collection rods. You save the hassle, the mess and lots of money by not having to buy replacement filters.

Run 24 hours a day! Because it?s silent, and because it?s powered by so little energy, you?re free to run the Quadra 24 hours a day, every day! Other air cleaners have fan motors that use up to 250 watts. But Ionic Breeze is electronic and uses less than 15 watts...like a night-light! And because other air cleaners are so noisy, people tend to turn them off ? allowing airborne irritants to build back up in no time. With ours, you run it all the time so it keeps on cleaning the air.

Traps allergens! Our tests show Quadra?s electrostatic collection system excels at trapping airborne particulates of one micron or larger ? the typical size of pollen, cat dander and other proven allergens. It really helps to clear the air!

Saves money! It may seem like air purifiers sell for about the same price, but there?s a huge difference in costs over just a few years. When you add the cost for electricity over five years and the cost for replacement filters for the same period, you could easily spend $1,500 more with other units ? beyond the initial purchase price!

Really cleans the air! You?ll see with your own eyes the dramatic difference Ionic Breeze can make. When you pull out the collection grid after just three weeks in your own home, you?ll find it hard to believe the gunk that was floating around in the air you breathe every day.

Satisfaction guaranteed! You have 60 days to try the Quadra, risk free, in your own home. If you?re not 100 percent delighted, return it for a complete refund. You are the only judge! I?m sure you will be very happy with every aspect of this remarkable air purifier. We?ve sold hundreds of thousands of them and ? I hear it all the time ? people really like them!"

Original best-selling Quadra stands 27 inches tall and weighs just 5 1/2 lbs. Ideal for any average-size room. Uses only 15 watts. Comes with one collection grid. Three-year warranty. Plugs into grounded outlet. Select gray, black finish or burltech. Created by Sharper Image Design.

get one so u can sue them when u get cancer. ozone is good when it is thousands of miles up in the stratosphere but ozone is very bad when it is near the surface as well as contributes to smog.

There was a story on one of those TV news magazine shows (20/20 maybe) a couple months ago about these things. They said that humans aren't meant to be around so much ozone. They showed these businesses where they installed these to freshen the air and the employees were getting sick from all the ozone...

If you want cleaner air, just open a window for awhile...

Opening your window is how a lot of the dust gets in your house!

And yes, this was the worst rated air cleaner by consumer reports. The highest rated one of the ones they tested was the Friedrich C-90A

"Another claim said the Ionic Breeze Quadra "powers through smoke," but Consumer Reports standard cleaning test showed otherwise.

Cigarette smoke and other fine particles were pumped into a sealed chamber. A spectrometer then measured how rapidly the cleaners remove particles from the air.

"The Ionic Breeze, on the other hand, when we turned it on, it removed very few particles,"

Here's a summary of the ratings:

All Sharper Image products suck. I have bought 4 items from them and they all don't work good. Even their scooters suck.

A little more fuel for the fire....
I had a customer who had one of these and she had lit candles near it. Within a day, the oily smoke-stuff from the candles had coated everything in the room! When I cleaned the carpet and upholstery, it was very obvious how bad the coating was. Just remember, don't have candles near these things. :)

I bought one from the Sharper Image auction a year ago WITHOUT the ozone deal (the original one they had). Only thing that doesn't work is the light that says "clean". But, when it gets a thick coat of dust, it starts to hiss a bit, and you know to clean it. No big deal. It works great and I think does make a difference. Pulls out an amazing amount of dust in 2-3 weeks.

I however, would NOT buy the ozone one. Very bad health-wise. For those of you unaware, that's also one of the reasons you shouldn't ever work in a copy store.

How do you know which one spits out ozone? :p

I bought a HEPA filter, I realize they're loud, but when put up to my 3x120mm case fans, it doesn't really matter that much :-D

The Quadra is the one with the ozone (blue light). I don't even know if they sell the original Ionic Breeze or not.

Truthfully, a good HEPA filter will kick the crap out of one of these. However, if you want silent, then the original is the way to go. It doesn't seem to move a lot of air, but the amount of dust it collects in a few weeks testify to it actually working.

The review on smoke is correct. I'd heard that before...if you think it's going to suck in smoke from the poker night, buy something else. If you want something quiet in your bedroom, buy the original Ionic Breeze.

All of the ionic breeze filters create ozone; however the amount of ozone they create is rather small. I had the original and when it died (after about 3 years) I returned it and paid about $100 for the Quadra, I have had no problems due to ozone (I have rather severe asthma and if there was allot of ozone it would certainly affect me) and the amount of dust it removes is quite good. I would have no problems recommending this filter.

I bought the original Ionic Breeze when it first came out. It really doesn't work. There is some dirty on the collector rods, but the amount is so small, I consider it to be completely ineffective. BTY, all of the Ionic Breezes produce ozone which can damage electronics over time.

Ever since we bought our ionic breeze I've found it difficult to breadbox my girlfriend, it seems to suck the zest straight out of our sheets.

I bought one of these earlier in the summer as a test. It seemed to work OK. They all put out ozone but the packaging says it's been rated as such a small amoutn you don't have to worry about it. (it also says to not use candles by it).

It seemed to work OK. Within a couple days it was pretty dirty. The main thing I like is that you just wipe it off and don't have to ever buy a replacement filter. I also have two normal HEPA air filters but with 3 cats, they go from white to dirty black in about 2 months when they are supposed to last 3 years. And at $90 a replacement filter, there's no way I'm using those.

I only had it for a month and returned it (but that's what I was goign to do all along). I was planning on buying one or two from the auction site in a couple months anyway.

F/W had a link to this site that has tons of reader feedback about these units.

Lots of people have overly high expectations from the commercials but a lot of people have said they work just fine. Anyway, take a look.

Link

Here's one of the recent responses.

I bought an ionic breeze quadra three weeks ago to make the air in my bedroom less dusty and clean it from pollen. I have some problems with nasal congestion due to allergy during the springtime and this year it was so bad I could not sleep any more.

The good news is that the Quadra actually DOES help removing dust and pollen from the air, as one can see when cleaning the internal rods, and my nose tells the same story. It is much better and I can sleep again.

Also, everything else in our bedroom is less dusty. We had to clean and dust off everything twice a week, now there is no visible dust on any surface even after one week. So regardless of what some people here say, the unit does a good job removing dust and pollen from the air.

Noise- yes, if I don't clean it every week, it starts to hum and crackle and spark. When I clean the rods, it gets better. According to some comments here, I am also prepared to clean the metal strings if the noise does not go away and that should do the job.

Ozone- let's forget about the aioli panic for a moment and be objective. Hey, have you ever used a copy machine? Smell something? Same smell? Yeah, it is the same process. Electrically charged plate(s) and metal string with high voltage. Produces ionized air, i.e. O3 = Ozone. Like with many other things, small amounts are OK, large amounts are dangerous for your health (although nobody ever died from ozone). Ever wondered what that freshness in the mountains is about and why some people get a headache in the mountains (besides from the lower density of air)? It's ozone. So let's face it: the amounts of O3 emitted by the Quadra can cause a headache or cough for sensitive people running it close to their bed or in a small closed room on 'high' setting. My tip: Move it away from your bed or run it on 'low'. That takes care of it. By the way, Ozone does a good job creeping into corners and into your carpet, disinfecting it and killing germs.

Sharper Image customer service? Well, I did not have to call them so far but if I should have any problem, I'll refer to the full three-year-warranty and I am pretty sure that I will get a replacement. Everything else would be obvious fraud which I do not think they want to get in realistically.

Bottom line- the Quadra works great for me, helps me with my allergy and definitely makes the air cleaner. You should be careful when cleaning it and make sure to let the rods dry completely (as the manual suggests). If you are an over-sensitive person with a tendancy to panic about things you do not fully understand (such as Ozone), you should consider buying a HEPA because it sounds more friendly than 'Ionic'.

From my corporate experience with filtered air, removal of suspended particulates (pollen, dust, grit, dander) in the air requires a minimum air exchange rate (i.e. "air flow" would be the oversimplied term). The Ionic series of air cleaners wouldn't be effective at all for removing pollen and dust because its amount of air flow is far too low to process the air in the room. I suppose Sharper Image can claim it is an air cleaner because it might remove 0.001% of the particles in a room after one day. No thanx. If the air with the particles doesn't go inside the air cleaning unit, then the particles won't be cleaned properly. I don't want something that makes a lot of negative ions to make the particles attach themselves electrostatically to the fabric and/or walls. While that "cleans" the air of a room, I think it makes more of a mess than it would help. There is a difference between negative ions (the useful product) and ozone (the product accused of increasing chance of leukemia) created by an air cleaning device. If the power is turned up too high, the electrostatic device will make ozone and if too low, not as many negative ions are made.

I visited a Sharper Image storefront and all of their Ionic cleaners produced a strong ozone smell. So no thanx. They do look very nice though.

That is the part that I worry about. 30-40 years ago they told us asbestos was fine as well. The Army used to take guys out by where they were going to set off a nuclear weapon, and gave them sunglasses.

Horrible, horrible analogies. By that method of thought, why bother breathe, drink, or eat? Someday someone might prove all three of those actions cancer causing some day.

the ozone isn't going to hurt you.

I've read a bunch of articles on these things, and I want to clear up a few things:

a: Hepa filter machines arent' supposed to be run all the time. They're supposed to be on like 15 minutes a week. The Ionic breeze is meant to be on all the time. You can run a HEPA filter all the time, but if you calculate the amount of time a single filter is supposed to last, you'd have to replace them every month at $50-105 per filter, it can get pretty expensive.
b: the consumer reports study was constructed to test how well a filter can filter out agents in the air in a highly contaminated room, and how quickly it can do it. the Ionic breeze is not designed to clean out a room in 15 minutes like HEPA filter machines are.
c: the difference between the standard ionic breeze and the quadra is the blue light which has nothing to do with ozone. It's a bacteria killing light. It killes live agents in the air.
d: the study I read said that you were more likely to hurt your eyes from sitting in front the screen you're looking at right now than you were to hurt your lungs from inhaling the ozone that is outputted from these things. The ozone thing is propoganda from the HEPA companies, because they can't compete on a price basis.
e: If both a HEPA filter machine and the ionic breeze are run as directed, then the ionic breeze is as good, and sometimes better than the HEPA machines.

i think bottom line is:
ionic breeze may work depending on the situation, but for most people $350 is way overpriced and $140 is a bit too high too when compared to normal hepa filters

Actually $140 is cheap compared to normal HEPA Filters. Usually any given unit is around $100 plus replacement filters are usually close to another $100. The main bonus with the Ionic Breeze thing is there are no filters to replace, you just clean them. Now if you can find a HEPA filter with cleanable filters, that'd be great, but most of those are upwards of $400.

However, $350 is way way overpriced but you can get them at Sharper Image's auction site (even Brand New Ones) for under $200. Refurbished ones are even less.
