Hi all.

I recently got a 8 bay case from Sharkoon. It is working pretty well, happy with the purchase. However, the PSU fan is quite loud. I would like to upgrade it with a pico psu fanless, but I am not sure if it can handle 8 x HDD. It is working as Raid 50 and mainly using green drives from Western Digital at about 6w per drive, so 60w is top power usage. What I am not sure about is the amperes. Every HDD is about 1-2A while being used, but I think they have power spikes than can rise that a lot.

Do you think a pico psu capable of 25a at the 12V rail would handle a 8HDD raid 5 setup without problems?

Your math doesn't add up. 6w @ 12v = 0.5A, not 1-2A.

Otherwise, sure, that would be fine. But you'll be hard-pressed to find a PicoPSU with a 300W output. (25A x 12v = 300w.)

Fortunately, a 150w PicoPSU would power 8 HDDs just fine.

Assuming WDC is talking about amps in their green specification sheet when they say "12VDC ±10% (A, peak) 1.75", 8 drives require 14 peak amps (+- 10%). Peak requirements vary by model. Startup hard drive power requirements may be challenging. Hard drive startup is sometimes staggered to mitigate this concern and you have other requirements such as a case fan and the motherboard. 25 amps is overkill. I would assess whether your environment offers staggered startup before buying a 150 watt power supply.
