Sharing multiple TV channels over LAN

Dear Friends ! 🙂

Is there some hardware or software which could help me in sharing multiple TV channels over LAN. I have already shared one TV channel on lan. Please help me if any one got the solution.

Thanks

indeed. each simultaneously tuned channel requires a seperate tuner

as for software, you need some sort of server client combo

some optons are:

BeyondTV+ BeyondTV link
sageTV + sage recorder
mythtv + mythtv (linux)

Dear Mojonba1,

Thanks for the quich reply dear. I am using UMedia server for live TV broadcast.
I have tried to use multiple TV tuners but the problem is that audio of only one channel is transmitted forward to clients.

Dear Goosemaster,

Thanks for kind reply dear. I have read the features of BeyondTV and SageTV, but they haven't mentioned any where that multiple TV channels could be viewed by different users at the same time. Please help me in finding the solution for it. Currently i am using UMedia Server and clients could watch only one channel on a web page.

I have heard from some one and saw a picture also that on one side of a web page is a caculator like channel changer on which numbers 1,2,3.. are present and on the right side of the web page is the player in which clients could view video and can change channels.

Thanks.

I unfortunately have no experience sharing tv over a lan and have personally never heard of umedia server. I was just giving my common sense input. I don't know how many channels you want to share, but estimating that the average cable feed has 25 plus quality channels, means you need 25 tuners. That means about 5 boxes full of tuners using consumer grade stuff. Maybe there is professional grade hardware more apt to do your stuff. I dunno. Sorry I cannot be of much help. Great idea though.

with beyondtv, tuners are available to all assuming that htey are not in use.

nets say I ahve 3 tuners on ther 'server' and 4 clients.

at max capacity everyone can watch a recording, or watch a channel, first come first server, or peopel can tune in to channel that are tuned.

Dear Mr. nweaver,

Thanks for your kind reply. I have a windows based Server System. I am using Windows Server 2003. Could I use myth on Windows based system...?

Dear Friends,

The same topic of sharing TV Channels over Lan was discussed on this forum, but remained incomplete. Someone told that UMedia Server could be used on Windows based system and with a little programming of a web page, one could make a console for chaning channels.

So please help me in finding the solution for it. I wish if multiple users could watch TV channels of their choice at the same time, not at first come first server basis. Is there some hardware, some magic Tuner box, that could do this for me...?

Thanks and waiting for kind replies.

1. no; myth tv is linux only.

2. beond tv and sage tv are what you should eb looking at

tonight I was at a friends house who has BTV 4.

We were watching recording on two client pcs (one was wired and one was wireless) and watching live HD on the server (wired)...all at the same time.

Dear Goosemaster,

Thank you so much for a quick reply. You know that TV channels are live broadcasts. So could i use BTV for watching multiple live broadcasts...? As one user is watching one channel and other is watching an other, so with BTV it will work fine..?

Yes, but as everyone has stated, you will need (1) tuner per stream. Each tuner will ahve to tune to a channel, so unless you get a special tuner (MCE PVR-500) you will only have one onboard tuner per card, and will be able to tune one channel per card.

With 4 tuners in the server and four clients:

1)each client can watch a unique channel simultaneously.
2)or you can mix and match recording and clients logging in and watching those recordings in progress.
3) or as many clients as your server can handle can log in to watch a bunch of recordings

Think of it like bittorrent. there are only so many torrrents, and as many people as you want can join them😀

4) stop using 'Dear' ...we like to keep it informal😉

<--his penguin suit is in the washing machine😱

5) keep this in mind:

beyond TV and others use the terms SERVER to describe the server/client relationship of their software. The machine with the tuners that "serves" the content is basically a windows pc with TV tuner cards running beyond tv. it is fully usable. the Beyond TV link client is software that runs on other machines, giving them the ability to leech and even command the beyondtv software that resides on the SERVER

This should not, in any way, be confused with different flavors of windows such as server 2003. that is completely different.

I liek the way you think:beer:

you could also buy lots of ice cream, that is what I use my license money on now that I gave MS the finger for all but one machine (and that is soon to be only a VM box on linux)

Thanks nweaver and Goosemaster,

This information is so valauable for me.

So 'nweaver' will you guide me that what flavour of linux i must use for mythtv and whether i have to use multiple tv tuners for multiple channles with mythtv...? I think for each tuner i would have to use separate computer, becuase audio of only one channel could go out at one time, so i can't use multiple tv tuners in one computer.

Dear 'Goosemaster' What do you say on it...?

Dear 'Goosemaster' What do you say on it...?

The sound with modern PCI TV Cards is digitized and sent over the pc bus to the app that made the call.....ie, you can have 6 recordings going on at the same time...audio and everything🙂

My friend records HDTV and regular TV simultaneously if you can believe that😀 (using BeyondTV)

As for using MythTV, i honestly would not dare recommend it to someone like yourself. It is really high-level stuff and requires a weekend for even an avid user to fine tune..

That said, there is an exception: knoppmyth is a 'live' distribution of the popular knoppix distribution of linux. By 'live' it means that you simply but in the CD and can actually run everything in RAM. Even cooler is that it will give you option of isntalling it on a PC ready to go😀 This is very nice and you would definitely be able to get it to work😀 To use it thought wou will need a PC that will ahve to be completely erased ("formatted") so make sure you are using a spare pc with nothing on it. Keep in mind that we are not talking windowx XP here. It is a compeltely different enviroment so if anything goes wrong, be prepared to spend a long time agaonizing over internet linux forums.

Don't get me wrong, linux is an excellent OS and mythtv and the knoppmyth derivative are stellar, but they require experience 🙂

As for sticking with windows, I can HIGHLY recommend BeyondTV by snapstream media (snapstream.com)

I have used them for years and am thrilled at their latest release (version 4). YOu have to pay for it, but it runs on windows XP, and has built in transcoding (it will automatically compress files into more managable formats such as DivX, wma, and others.
In addition, it allows you to share your TV signal and your recordings with every pc in the house😀

oh, and on the internet too😀

<--used to watch both LiveTV and recordings on the computers in the cafeteria on campus during lunch😀

Dear Goosemaster,

Ok i got all of your points, but kindly tell me how could I use multiple TV tuners in one PC. How will I configure them. I have got Pinnacle TV Tuner. How much TV tuners i can install in one system and how will adjust their audio and video to be delivered separately.

I am sure you will not mind as I ask so much questions...

Regards

John

maybe we should do this over AIM or google talk. I have explained these clearly and there still seems to be confusion:
