Sharing internet...

TridenT

Lifer
How many of you share internet with other people and charge them for it? How much do you charge, how much is your plan, what wireless router do you use, how far does the wireless reach, how fast is it, who is your provider, and can you game on it during busy hours?

I'm thinking of getting one of these plans: http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/9096/whoaya.jpg Sharing it with the tenants in the building I am going to be seeing soon. I need a really good wireless router though for the walls. 😕

I hope you live with a bunch of computer dweebs. All of you are going to do is just bitch at each other about how WoW is laggy as fuck because all of you are torrenting at max power.

Why?

I've been there, done that.

If you do this be aware it's against your ISP's TOS. I don't think they can catch you unless you make a call for service and when they check out your router they see other pc's connected but be forewarned.

I've let my neighbors use my wifi before, but they're always cool enough to ask and I've never charged them. The houses were pretty far apart so getting a signal was tough for them anyway.

But we're all in the same building. :hmm: :awe:

Anyway, I don't wanna pay $50/month for internet. I guess I'll just grab it off one of my neighbors and ask to share their plan or whatever.

Go business class.

I have a business class comcast DOCSIS 3.0 50MB line...share between 11 units, I manage it, and have the only LAN drops, so it's like built in throttling.

DD-WRT on 3 routers, in a WDS mesh setup.

We pay $21 a unit, and these guys were paying $50~ each, and used it once a week, so it was helpful for them, and helpful for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't that the same thing but in reverse? :hmm:

You'll want to do it right too ... don't skimp. I put something up with that DD-WRT WDS stuff, but I want something more solid, which will cost at least 500$ to hit all 11 unit's with great signal.

Be prepared to support it, and be prepared to be the tech bitch of the complex...AFAIK you aren't very tech savvy, so you might want to see who else is in your building that can help.

Or am I just posting in another troll Trident thread?

$500? Why do I need to pay $500? Shouldn't a $50-$100 router suffice?

I'm decently savvy. I don't remember all seven layers of the OSI model off the top of my head, but I do know some pretty trivial troubleshooting. I am also not bad at using a search engine. 😛

I do not troll.

If you do do something like that make sure you get a router that's flashable to DDWRT. You will get the features of a router costing thousands, some of which will actually come in handy for that kind of use.

If your router works fine as it is, don't bother flashing unless you need something that isn't offered by your router's existing firmware.

For the usage that Trident is talking about he will need traffic shipping, logging, etc... I wouldn't really know how to go about setting up a service like that but I do know that most of your 50-$100 routers don't provide these features and a lot more that DDWRT does provide and which would be very useful in this kind of setup. Heck even I flashed my router to Tomato and I couldn't be happier. I'm using a few features of Tomato that did not come with the default firmware.

i use to let neighbor borrow my connection. Told them to give me the good parking spot and 15 bucks a month.

dayum. You gave them the screws. :colbert:

I'd love to have a parking spot in trade for wireless internet. There's absolutely no fucking parking at all where I am except paid parking.

I bet your neighbors would prefer if you just kept to yourself and left them alone.
