Sharing internet connection with tenant.

Scenario: One internet connection coming into office. My office computers are networked together. Tenant leasing office space within my office.

Question: Can I share my internet connection with the tenant but not allow them to have access to our shared drive on the file server?

I'm no expert, but maybe it will give you the right direction to go. I think if you set it on two seperate subnets, the router will be able to route the internet to both subnets, but each subnet won't see the other one. I think any linux firewall setups will do this for you with ease.

I'm sorry if this won't work in your situation, but hopefully this bump will provide you the answers you seek!

What type of router do you have currently? If it is capable of creating vlans, then go with what Mark said. If you just have a basic SOHO (small office/home office) type router that can't do VLANs, then another option would be to chain a couple of routers together to segregate the networks.

To do this, you'll have the "master" router connected to the Internet modem and from there, two seperate routers will act as clients of the master router (attached to the LAN ports on the master) and the tenants' PCs will attach to one of the client routers, and your PCs attach to the other client router. This will allow both networks to access the Internet, but computers on one network will not be able to see any resources on the other network.

I wouldn't do the 3 routers thing, I would go internet->router1 (with tenant)->router2 with your stuff. The NAT/firewall in router 2 keeps him out just fine.


But really, we need more info...like, do they need live IP's, do you need Live IP's, how much port forwarding/translation do you do, what is your current equipment, etc.

Assuming that what you are trying to do is legal (In most cases sharing Internet connection with another household is Illegal).

The easiest safest solution is two use two Routers and create a segregated Network,

Thanks for all of your responses, guys! I do not have the equipment yet as the building is about to be constructed. I need VPN access for my office and I was thinking of a Netgear FVL328. A friend of mine suggested a Sonic Wall product instead.

Should be legal since it is in a commercial building and Cox is requiring commercial service.

Passing the VPN traffic through two devices is more problematic. It can be done, but any type of forwarding through to the second network ( your network ) requires forwarding on both routers.

If you have multiple IPs setup with your ISP try this;
DSL MODEM plugged into switch, then plug in each of your own routers to your switch configured with your static IPs.
Then each network will be seperate.
(someone correct me if I am wrong.)

Couldn't you actually put the second guy on router 2 and connect it in to router 1.... but have it leave DHCP on so it creates it's own network? Then the business router woudl still be first which shoudl make things easier and you can just set that the other IP range isn't allowed.

Funny story about sharing an internet connection. A buddy of mine was going to use his neighbors connection (they live in an apartment complex) so he drilled through the wall to get the cable through and they ended up drilling into the water sprinkler pipe for putting out fires and flooded his whole apartment. I laughed my ass off. You might have had to been there though.
