I have been running Windows2000 Pro on both machines. All I would need to do is set the folders to share and make sure all comps were on the same workgroup.

Now with XP, I have set my folders to share to all and set all comps to the same workgroup but still under network workgroup it only shows the computer I am on under workgroup. I could ping both computers , I ran the Network Wizard but still no luck. I would think this would be easier with XP since it usually sets up other areas of OS for you.

What am I missing. Networking has always been my weak area.

Basic Network:

Linksys 4 port wired router
Toshiba Cable Modem(comcast)
Both computers can access the net and game head to head over LAN. Just not share folders.

Have you tried accessing the share using its address, i.e.

\\computername\sharename

More than likely the folder is shared, just that you can't browse to it. I would also suggest turning off simple file sharing in Windows XP, I'm not on an XP box at the moment but I think its Tools->Folder Options and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing.
