I enabled ics on my win2k machine to share dsl. The win98se won't go online, but it sees me on the network and it can ping me. I've set everything up per timhiggins.com. I don't know why he can't get online. Any ideas?
Jay
ps: I have 2 nics in my win2k box and my ics was working with a diff client computer last week.

If he can ping an internet site by IP address the problem would be in his DNS configuration.

Well, he can ping internet ip addresses. He can even get the pages to pop up if he types the ip addy instead of the url. So how do I fix the dns configuration?

I tried doing that, but in win98se, it requires a hostname and domain. We only have a workgroup w/the default name "workgroup".

I was thinking and came across something that applies to win98 and not sure if it does to 2k. After nics are set up and the computer is turned off, taking out the nics and putting them in diff slots than original will cause win98 to mess up. It will still assume some settings apply to the original config. To fix it, u have to reinstall. Does that apply to win2k? In the device window, 1 of my nic has a "#2" appended to the description of the nic.
Please help...I'm stumped

On the DNS page, for "hostname" you can enter anything you like - the name of the computer is what it is actually asking for, but you can put anything in there that you want to without it affecting anything. If left blank, the window won't close, so you've got to put something in there, but what's in there has no effect.
If you change an adapter's slot without first removing it in device manager, you certainly can confuse the OS, as you've just noticed. To correct it, remove both instances (in device manager) of the duplicated device, and then let w2k find and reinstall the device.
