I was using Sygate to share my drives. My drives on the other computers would just show up in my computer or windows explorer. Now I've removed sygate and I'm using a router. Is there any way to have the shared drive show up in windows explorer? Also, using a router is there any reason I should password protect them. Are they totally protected by the router (netgear rt311)? TIA

You should be able to right click on the drive you want to share out and select sharing. Click on the New Share button and don't forget to assign permissions.

Once you've shared out the drive you can map the drive from your other computers so they show up in explorer.

Um, excuse my ignorance, but how do I map drives? Also, why would I need to assign permissions? Thanks.

Okay, I figured out the mapping thing. Still wondering about the permissions and the security issue with the router. Thanks.

once you've shared the drives, you should be able to see them in network neighborhood. Right click on the drive and select the Map network drive option.

The reason for setting permissions is to make sure that only the people you assign can read and write to the drive. By default the shared drives are open to everyone. This means if someone can penetrate you router and get on you network they will be able to screw with your shared drives, but if they can get through you router then they are probably skilled enough to screw with your network regardless of permission. This part I'm not sure of but when it comes to security my take is you can never be too careful.
