Okay...I'm shortly getting ADSL and want to share the connection on my 2 networked PC's. The thing is, I only have Win 98 first edition. Now am I right in thinking that if I download one of the pieces of software found over here..., I will be able to share the connection over my LAN without upgrading my software?

Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks :)

There are a whole bunch of threads out there but I won't be a dick. Yes, just donwload one of those pieces of software and configure it by the guide the software should have. But, to use this proxy server you have to have 2 NICs in your computer and it has to be on for the other comps to get on the net.

I would go with Sygate but it's not a freeware. For a freeware, you can get the NAT32 or EasyProxy (something). NAT32 is available at www.nat32.com

Ok thanks guys, I shall use search in future ;)

So just to confirm - I need two network cards in the host PC and 1 in the other?

Yes, that's correct.
One for your LAN and the other for the WAN (ADSL).

Um, did I mention that the ADSL modem is a USB external modem - does this make any difference?

(sorry for being such a newbie when it comes to the wonderful world of networking ;))

I have no person experience with USB modems, but from what i heard/read when they first started appearing, they don't compare at all to a regular modem.

Not sure if that has changed recently or not.

Does your ISP use static or dynamic IP's?

If static, will they give you more than one?

Wile software programs are fine, I personally prefer an all hardware setup, be it it individual IP's and switch/hub, or router.

Thanks I'll look into that. I think I'm going to go and read a few guides, once the ADSL actually gets installed. I just wanted to get a few pointers.

Thanks guys.

Why not just use the internet sharing feature under Win 2000 it works great, just make sure you use firewall software with it.
