Sharing AOL/DSL Connection with a Linksys DSL Router.

Alright. Heres the scenario. Friend has AOL/DSL at his house, and wants to share the internet connection with 3 other computers, which he has done with a hub before. Now he has the 4port Linksys DSL router, but can't seem to log on the AOL software. He only has one dynamic IP address, but I know you can share your connection if you have only one dynamic ip with other computers, my friend does it with swbell dsl.
Any form of help or tips is apprecaited

so you're saying that internet access works ok, but the only problem is that computers behind the firewall can't logon to aol right?

you most likely need to open up a port on the router (port forwarding) to allow the aol client to connect through the router. i'm not sure what the port would be though.

is my first sentence correct?
 
no no, the main computer that logs in, will not connect to aol

the other computers wont be using aol software, just IE

if he's using DSL, then why on earth does he need AOL?

so does the main computer have any 'net connection?

picture this, I have 3 computers on a lan , and my computer connects to my dsl allowing the other 2 computers to get internet access.

the only difference is my friend connects to aol, theres no 56k or anything, it signs on real fast just like any other dsl log in.
its just that when he tries to sign on, it wont detect his modem when its connected to the router. The thing is I can see the data light blink on the modem and router when it tries to sign on , but it never goes thru

Ok, we'll figure this out. Let's see.

so YOU have a network whereby a computer acts as a router

versus your friend, who has a network whereby there is a physical linksys router right?

so that means ANY computer on your friends network is going through the router (correct?)

if it's DSL, then there should be SOME kind of internet connection w/out using aol, right?

he's just connecting to aol via TCP/IP...which probably requires a special port to be opened on the router.

if he's using a router, basically he would just plug everything in, then reset the DSL modem and things should be good to go assuming every computer behind router is set

to DHCP in tcp/ip properties.

maybe a picture will help? this shouldn't be a difficult problem (in theory)

He has a westwell dsl modem, the cat5 from it goes to the wan port on the linkysys 4port router. then he has a cat5 running from his nic in his computer to port 1 on the router. Right now we just want to be able to log on his adsl first, then I can worry about his other computers later ;]

but no, there is no connection without the aol software, I tried via tcp ip, he pays AOL for BOTH aol & dsl, they call it aol plus or some crap. hehe I know making it work would be easy with a simple internet connection, but the only way he can connect is thru AOL 7.0. I even tried that internet connection thats built in winXP, to see maybe it would connect just with a user name and pw, but it didnt go. It did try to validate the login info though.

Ahhh...i gotcha now. so aol actually PROVIDES the DSL eh? I have heard about that, but never seen it before in person.

Does the computer connect ok to AOL when connected DIRECTLY into DSL? (i.e. remove the router temporarily?)

If so, then it sounds like the router might need to be configured different than usual in order for it to work. Have you read any of the fine print about the AOL DSL service? I mean, if it only works with special software, it's not possible to install software on a router...

Do you happen to have a link or anything to a support page for his AOL/DSL connection? I'd be interested to see if i could figure it out, might still be a simple fix
 
Yep, aol provides the dsl, and it connects ok directly, without the router. aol dsl isnt supposed to support net sharing...lol but we were able to do it with a hub.

yeah, i'll think about it some more too and see what i can find out.

Aight, I was able to connect the aol dsl thru the router, AND was able to make 2 computers see eachother on the lan. So far so good, but when I try to access the net from the 2nd computer, I get nothing. At least they see eachother though, we might need to mess with it more, but we've had enough for today hehe.

Tell us how your other nic's are set up (auto IP , auto dns)?
from dos window, type "ipconfig /all" on each and see what addresses they are assigned by your router.
Be sure the gateway is correct as compared to the nic that can connect to AOL.
Also they should be able to ping the router, which i am certain they can because you are being routed via the lan.
try pinging aol from the clients that cannot connect.
Or ping this address 212.100.230.160 (ultimate search service).
