Sharing a Printer

Running XP Pro with a Brother MFC-7420 printer. I have the printer shared and my x64 vista machines cannot connect to it.

I have tried everything I can think of, but my x64 Vista machines cannot connect to the printer.

Any thoughts?

disable the firewall in xp pro mechine where the printer is connected restart the printer service.

go to run type \\<xp pro ip address>

you should view the printer icon in the shared window

right click it and select connect

Thank you, but it doesn't work.

You will need to have 64bit drivers for Vista (here) installed on your Vista machines, and then try to connect to the share computer.

While installing, add new local port, and input the share location and name. i.e. \\WINXP\Brother

The ps driver is not even for a Brother 7420 printer. I don't know if Brother screwed up, b ut something is not right with their site.

Did you scroll to the bottom of the page and download the Add Printer Wizard Driver? It is weird that its not for the printer since their site plainly says it is.

They could have made an error I guess. You do need to do add printer, then select the driver and when asked select local port, and input the network path to connect.

The MFC 7420 has built in Vista drivers. Things to check:
1. What is the error you're getting? Google it!
2. Can you see the XP box from the Vista boxes by typing \\xppro
3. Are you sure it's shared? Can any other networked computer print to the Brother printer?

MFC/brother printers are a pain in the rear to get working. I have a combo fax/copy/scanner and i never got more than the copier feature to work properly.
