Me, personally i've never had a bad experience with a mechanic, except i'm pretty sure a part i had replaced under warranty was repaired and not replaced like i asked... other than that nothing.

What about you people?

I've gone to a mechanic ONCE, and that was because the van failed emissions, and I had to get $150 of work done to get a waiver (I knew it wouldn't pass, since it had leaky valve guides...but I was only using it to haul stuff every so often). My bill? "Tested emissions--over limit. Cleaned throttle body. Tested again, still over limit."

$150 please, thank you.

That's why I do all my own work.

One mechanic replaced a ruptured fuel line, inserting a section of rubber hose in the line. This was on an older truck with a vacuum fuel pump. Whenever it reached 45 miles per hour the truck died as the fuel line collapsed under vacuum.

On an Escort, a mechanic replacing a worn fuel pump broke a filter tip off the pump. The tip traveled up the fuel line lodging against the entrance to the fuel injector system. It took two weeks and $900 to figure what the hell was wrong with the engine.

I don't trust Mechanics. My one friend went to one and totally ripped her off because she didn't know much about cars.
