Shaq = expensive domestic labor on the decline
Yao = cheap chinese labor on the up and up

I never quite understood why everyone on this forum rides yao's d!ck so much. I've never seen that outside of this forum. Don't take this the wrong way, maybe its because there are a lot of asians on the board? Who knows.

Anyway, if you're looking for a long term solution, I'd take Yao because he has many more years ahead of him. But if you're the type of GM that is looking for a championship NOW, I'd take Shaq, because no matter what you guys think, RIGHT NOW Shaq is the better player.

having seen Yao for the past couple of years, I am not so sure he will ever be as dominant or have as much impact as Shaq

I agree with you that Shaq is a better player than Yao right now, in terms of physical dominance. But even if I am a GM looking for a championship now, I would not take Shaq over Yao. Shaq is not a guarentee for a championship. Lakers had Shaq and Kobe, plus two hall of famers and bunch of good role players and they got thoroughly kicked by the Pistons. McGrady is pretty good, but I don't think he is as good as Kobe, Houston has one or two decent players and that's it, nothing compare to the Lakers of last year. Plus if they do trade for Shaq, they would loose those few decent players as well because of the salary difference between Shaq and Yao. So that puts Houston with 2 superstar with nobody else.

If Lakers couldn't win a championship with Shaq, Kobe and lots of good players, I doublt Houston have much of chance in winning a championship in next one of two years with Shaq and McGrady and a skeleton crew. They actually have a better chance with Yao and McGrady, plus the left over money to get solid supporting cast and play good team basketball.

You must love Yao, or you are clearly racist. And nobody likes a racist.

Maybe because there are few tall guys in the league that are actually any good? Shaq, Duncan, and Yao would be the top 3 big men in the league hands down.

He's still better than an overweight center with only 2-3 years left, max, who can't shoot free throws even if his life depended on it.

Be that as maybe, I dont think there is a single player out there right now who can impact a team as much as Shaq can

How about if we give you Gundy and you give us Tomjonavich back? And you can keep Shaq.

I'm completely surprised by this. I would take Shaq for like 3 years. I think he can still dominate and score 25+ pts every game. Plus, McGrady and Shaq is almost exactly like Kobe and Shaq, and you know how many rings they got with that combo.

No, I wouldn't make the trade. Shaq is on the downside of his career, while Yao has plenty of upside remaining.
