1. When was the last time you saw these theatric monks in a fight or any fighting competition?

2. If they can fare well, why do you not see any top UFC fighters being monks?

That seems a bit redundant of you, but I'd like to add that the vast majority of martial arts practitioners have absolutely zero interest in fight bouts for money or image. I can think of more than a few warriors I've known over the years who are introverted, quiet, humble guys who would never deface what they've worked hard to learn into some kind of cage match. One in particular looks like a professor or librarian, and I'd rather shave my head with a rusty cheesegrater than have to fight him. Nooooo thanks.

Fighting competitions are just that, competitions. They in no way represent a total tally concerning skill as far as the martial arts community goes. This metric you've presented may seem logical upon first glance, but it's really the same thing as me saying "xxxxxx is a complete pussy and couldn't touch Mas Oyama - afterall, how many bulls has he killed with his bare hands? Oyama-soke has killed dozens! There you go, proof that xxxxx can't fight!"

I can say with all honesty and conviction that were this Kimbo guy to face off against say, a combat veteran schooled in Systema, or budo taijutsu for instance, well...I don't think it'd go to well for him. Someone who prefers and at times insists on keeping things strictly boxing-like is going to get a quite a wake-up call when they tangle with someone trained in nerve destruction, or directional bone breaking. And I don't care how big and mean you look, someone caves in your windpipe - you're F-U-C-T.

Fixed.

you have to run away for a few seconds while reloading, they dont

Fixed again. And I could have up to 24 rounds. 1 round per guy would do the job easy, and aiming wouldn't be that difficult, so...

monks would not stand a chance against automatic weapons but guy who said they could take them on with a bat is obviously insane, especially if the monks were armed with spears. Wouldn't get a hit off before being jabbed in the belly or neck.

I'm sure that basically everyone here has multiple black belts in multiple styles. This is, after all, an internet forum.

But all this talk of one style being better than another, blah, blah, blah. Bunch of horse manure. Who wins in any fight? One of two, either the luckiest, or the best. Doesn't matter what style.

The luckiest...or the best......I like it.

The flashy stuff that sells ain't the real McCoy these days. For those bashing traditional gongfu as not being effective, do us a flavor - go pick a fight with an Eagle Claw or White Eyebrow sifu and let us know how it turns out. ;)

I guess that explains why skinny kung fu dudes completely dominate UFC. Oh wait, they don't.

This is going to degenerate into the typical pissing contest with the kung fu fans saying that the "real" kung fu guys don't fight in the UFC. This has been proven before. The kung fu guys thought they found a "real" kung fu master and he was promptly destroyed by a MMA fighter.

Please read my earlier post. While Shaolin monk demonstrations are not the measuring stick for fighting, neither is the UFC.

THAT was hilarious! i gotta find that movie now lol

Yea thanks for posting that, I watched it about a year ago and thought it was just an obscure film my roommate had that I'd never be able to find again (I had forgot the title). That wasn't even the best part of the movie.

Bruce Lee started the Mixed Martial Art revolution. His philosophy was to learn the best parts of each known martial art and apply for practicality. In fact, he won many amateur Western boxing matches, before he started to develop his martial art.

The UFC would be much, much closer since they're doing actual fighting. The others are just dancing with weapons. Impressive, but it isn't going to help in a real fight.
