*Shakes head* Please don't pay $500 to fix a flat tire.

As some of you know, I work in a call center that does "AAA" type work for large semi trucks. Well, often times people look in the phone book and call us for regular, private passenger vehicles as well.

Some guy is broke down in his driveway in Plainsfield, IL with a flat tire. He has a nail in it. Since it is a holiday, and since our stores are closed, the minimum service charge is two hours and it's also charged @ about 1.5 times the normal rate because it's a holiday.

Basically, this guy could go to a place to get his tire fixed for about $5, but instead he is paying us upwards of $300-400 to come out and do it for him in his driveway. Guess some people have more $$ than common sense.

edit: some spelling

"So what do I owe ya?"

"How much you got?"

"I'm asking you how much it is."

"And I'm askin' you how much you got."

😀

So the guy isn't comfortable changing his own tires, big deal. I bet there are things you can't do and have to pay money for someone to do it for you.

Unbelievable how helpless some people really are. Jeezus.

That's what I'm like. 🙁 Helpless when it comes to cars.

It's like some people and computers.

Well, $500 to fix a tire. I would THINK that a new tire would cost less than that, but since I really have zero experience with that, I really would have nothing to compare that cost to.

I agree. It's for this reason that I have 2 cars. I'm not comfortable doing any work on my cars.

I'm the first to admit there are things I can't do and have to have others do for me. Just like anyone else. Nobody can do everything, except maybe the A-team.

However, something like changing a tire is so simple it is reasonable to expect that anyone who is not paralyzed or completely decrepit can do it. Hence the reason nearly every car sold in the last 60 years has included a spare tire, jack, 4-way, and step by step easy instructions on how to perform the procedure. You don't need lots of muscle (above and beyond what most people possess, anyway), or any working knowledge of cars, or any mechanical inclination whatsoever. It's a matter of following very simple instructions and maybe getting your hands a bit dirty in the process.

Maybe it's just me, but if it came down to wasting $400-$500 on having someone do something for me that was designed to be easily completed by the general public, there's no question I'd get my hands dirty, rather than throw money at it. I wouldn't be able to stand being that dependent on someone else for something like that.

Or, at the very least, couldn't the guy have found a neighbor or something that could have helped him? Give the guy a $20 or something for his help changing the tire. Lot better than wasting that kind of cash on something that dumb.
