Wait, so you think it's ok for anyone to be detained for hours, when they're not a criminal and have no reason to be suspected as one?

So much so that the person who complains about it should just go back to his country?

I don't get you people sometimes...

How would you feel if you were in France and were detained for no reason other than your name?

I was detained and questioned for about an hour coming back from another country. I am white, no criminal background, no real reason to stop me other than I had surfboards and looked like a surfer (all surfers smuggle pot I guess).

You didn't see me ranting and raving and tweeting the press. Get the fuck over it.

I know who he is. Never been to India, am not Indian.

edit:

i don't think Bollywood movies are that bad.
We have to remember the crowd they are aimed for. Its made for the guy who has spent 12 hours straight working. Life sucks, he is just trying to get by. All he wants to do is relax with some entertainment, and the movies is a perfect place. For a pretty cheap price he can get to be in a room that has actual air conditioning, which probably doesn't happen at work. Because he doesn't have the time to go often, and its their escape for the world, you need to have the movie be long else it is a waste of money. On top of it, you need to see everything --> the good, the bad, the love, the action, the danger, etc. etc. No one wants to see the same shit that happens in real life because its an escape from reality. That is why the stories are always over the top and people typically have interesting profession (aircraft pilot turned to drop-man for helicopter rescue operations).
Its all designed to give you everything you'd want to see in a single setting.

Don't know who this clown is, don't care who this clown is, hopefully he won't come back. Just another person who thinks being famous makes them important.

"I was really hassled perhaps because of my name being Khan. These guys just wouldn't let me through," he said in a text message to reporters in India.

who had just finished a month-long shoot in the United States for his upcoming film "My Name is Khan," which is about a Muslim man's experience with racial profiling.

Indian movie actors are actually immensely popular all over Asia. Also a lot of them maintain residences and visit the US on a regular basis. And he is one of the biggest Indian actors. So yea, I'd say a lot of people outside India know who the fuck this guy is.

LOL. Actual american citizens have had their rights stepped on all the time if they want to fly since 9/11 so why should I care about a foreigners perceived rights ? And if France detained me "unfairly" it would likely be my last trip to France. My friend(yale phd candidate) was recently detained for 3 hours at the Canadian border. He is typical waspy looking dude. Nothing suspicious. whambulence.

But your friend is not a celebrity -sure, 90% of anandtech is too ignorant to know who he is (and, boy, why are you guys so proud of ignorance?!) - he's a celebrity and people report on what happens to a celeb. Hell, photographers snap pictures of celebs using the bathroom and sell those pictures for quite a bit of cash - I doubt anyone's willing to pay to see pictures of you or your friends pee, right?

I don't think this is a case of him being a whiny prick, but more of a case of people knowing everything going on in the lives of celebs... I'm sure a little bit of it has to do with his movie coming out, but the dude is a HUGE star. People care what goes on in his life. He's an untalented star, but that's not really the point. Besides, this wasn't the front page of the NY Times, it was just some link - why do we get so worked up about this shit?

As far as profiling goes, I get pissed off by it. I don't understand why everyone here is so complacent about authority. I've been "randomly" picked, being a scary brownie (though my wife is a cracker - co-conspirator! Traitor!), and I've asked every time what the criteria was. I never caused a scene, and only bothered when I was being treated differently from everyone else (i.e. I never complain if everyone has to take their shoes off, but if 10 people go through and they only ask me to take off my shoes, I ask, then comply). It's never gotten me in trouble and, in fact, started a great conversation with a fellow traveler who was a Vietnam vet and respected my concerns. He was awesome and voluntarily removed his shoes as well (at Chicago O'Hare) since he himself felt that there should be one rule for all people, not selective rules based on physical criteria.

You guys are pansies if this shit doesn't bother you.

Newsflash: the world is larger than America... Is some Indian actor getting detained worth setting buildings on fire over? Of course not.. But is it newsworthy? Have you seen the news lately? They played funny youtube videos on tv the other day - that was local "news." It's all bullshit anyways, and racial profiling is an issue that's a little less fluffy than two cats humping to Duran Duran.... Calling this guy names because he was annoyed at being detained is a bit much. If I was detained, missed my flight, etc. etc. I'd text people as well - and that's all he did.

From what I read, he was pulled aside for questioning because an alert came up when his name was put into the computer. I don't see anything wrong with that. He might think he was unfairly hassled, but they were probably just following procedure.

If there's a terrorist called Will Smith, should they pull all Will Smiths aside? From what I understand, Khan's name is not uncommon. (Heck, I once sold an item to a Shahrukh Khan! And it wasn't a scam 😀 )

I still think the guy exaggerated the incident to whore his movie.

I don't think it is an exaggeration. Being pulled out of the line, fine, being questioned about his identity fine, held for a few hours before he can call his lawyer to prove his identity, not fine.

They probably should. Nobody wants to be the guy that lets terrorist Will Smith in to bomb some place.

Some would argue that the population of India (~1.1 billion) is not insignificant.

apparently bollywood films are also popular in the dubhai and abu dhabi so i've hear.

India has the world's largest film industry. The fact that none of the white Americans here know or care about that, along with the fact you don;t see anything wrong with detaining people for the crime of having brown skin, just goes the prove the point that you're all a bunch of dirty racists.
