Shadowmask For Gaming????

I am desperatly trying to find the "right" 19 inch monitor. I don't want to spend too much, but as the monitor is the most important part of the system, I could warrant up to $400 or so if it is REALLY worth it. It seems to me that most of the decent Aperature Grill monitors are around $400, and that a decent shadowmask can be had for around $300. I like the looks of the NEC Accusync 90 and the Hitachi CM715. Both shadowmasks that can run 1280x1024@85hz, and both are very sharp I've been told. Howerver, I'm worried about the colors and brightness. I can get a Sony G400 or NEC FP950, which are AG, for a little over $400 which have great colors and can do 1600x1200@85hz, but if the NEC or Hitachi will work well I'd rather go with one of them. The monitor will be used almost completely for gaming, DVDs, and web editing, with some typing and browsing. Do you think I'd be satisfied the the Hitachi or NEC shadowmask? and if so which one? or should I spend the extra $$$$$ on the Sony or NEC w/ AG?

I'd recommend a flat shadow mask like the Samsung 900IFT or the Hitachi Ergoflat. Having a flat screen looks a lot better when watching DVDs. Aperture Grills are slightly brighter, but they have the wires on the screen. The best would be to go to a store and compare an AG with a SM, and see for yourself.

The typical rule of thumb is that ShadowMasks have sharper text, AG's have better colour satuartion.

But really in my experience you can't really generalize like that. I've seen some AGs with crappy colours, and Shadows with really nice colours.

NECs are considered very good monitors. Not the best, but definately good.

I'd try to get the NEC 90 and try to get it from a place that will allow returns so if you are very unhappy with it you can return it and go for the Sony. But if you want to save the $100 try the NEC...I think you will probably be happy with it.

Plus SMs don't have the horizontal lines. Don't know if those bother you but it's something to consider.

go NEC, although i have went through 2... GREAT COLOR, Sharp TExt, AND EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!

you can't go wrong there 😉... you will be happy...

NEC and Mitsubishi merged last year so the tubes are basically made by Mitsu and stamped with NEC on it. correct me if i am wrong...

Will Staples do free shipping on monitors? If so, will they do it if the place I am pricematching too doesn't? If I can get that EMS PM for $400-$40 I'll do that then.
