Shadow of Mordor (Xbone) a good game?

I saw that a GOTY edition is coming out soon, how's the game?
Is there some RPG elements, character progression?
You play as a known character or do you create one at the start of the game?

I really liked the game. Very open world, some RPG elements. Great graphics and it felt fun after you get the hang of things. The learning curve is a little steep at the beginning if you jump in and have no clue what you're doing. I died a lot 🙂

One of my favorite games in the last year. The controls and camera felt top notch which is important for this type of game. I really wish that Witcher 3 controlled a little more like this game.

I really liked it although it got repetitive. I traded it in before I finished it (I did do a lot of side missions).

+1 above. Repetitive, but enjoyable. Like most reviews said, it's the best of Assassin's Creed and Batman combined. The Nemesis system is pretty very interesting. You're also quite a godlike bad-ass by 3/4 into the game when you have enough abaility to possess 10+ captains. Put two of them against one another and with a touch of a button kill all of them and their cronies. There's 30 bodies lying about with loot to boot.

Funny, I did the exact same thing. Decent game. IIRC, I traded it into Best Buy during a promo period where they were offering me more than what I paid for the game. Meant to re-buy when it hit the budget bin, but TBH I don't see myself finishing it off unless my game backlog hits a drought.

The general consensus is that it's an excellent game but the DLC is mediocre. I'd advise just picking up the base game which you can find sometimes for $20 and avoid the DLC.

Shadow of Mordor was the first game I played when I picked up my PS4. I enjoyed it a lot but I wouldn't classify it as a game of the year. It only won the awards last year because there were a weaker class of games. There all some minor faults with the game but the combat is excellent and it's the best LOTR game I've ever played.

Dont have on a console, but its a great game and Highly recommend it! There is something very fun about meeting up with somebody that killed you, or somebody you put the beat down on coming back for revenge.

And the dread of watching them level up after killing you. 🙂

I just beat it yesterday, put about 45 hours into it total. I did a lot of the side missions and I'm tempted to try to finish all of the achievements but some of them sound pretty annoying so we'll see. It was a great game though, definitely got my money's worth out of it.

It's a good game and I see why so many people like it, but for me I thought it was way too easy and way way too repetitive.

Every game is repetitive. I don't think I can name a game that didn't have you doing mostly the same thing at each stage, chapter, area, or level.

Easy, yes the game can be easy if you play a specific way that makes it so.

There are varying degrees of repetitiveness, however. Although it's a pretty good game, I would agree that a valid knock of SoM is that it does feel overly repetitive because the enemies you fight are largely the same though the entire game (orcs). Plus there isn't much variation on how you fight the orcs or how they fight you.

Contrast with a game like Bloodborne, where, yeah, on an abstract level you are repeating the same actions over and over again (fighting monsters), but the approach you take for each monster has more variety than SoM and you are constantly running into new monsters that require new tactics as you progress through the game.

Of course, compare SoM to a game like Dynasty Warriors, and it's less repetitive in comparison. It's a spectrum.

Agreed. I got tired of killing the same orcs over and over. "You again? I killed you an hour ago. Grumble. I'll behead you this time!" (they come back if you don't actually fully kill them. If totally killed off, they're shown in a different way in the list of warlords.)

Regardless, tons of fun. Decent story. Bigger world needed perhaps, but overall worth playing. I got it for XMas, but would have paid for it.

The game really dug a bit deeper into some of the lore from Lord of the Rings. All the plants, animals, enemies, locations had a back story. Especially since you don't see much of the history of Mordor unless you dig deep into the silmarillion which I'm not sure covers it in much detail.
