I'd like to start off by saying that by no means am I good with computers... Anyways, I just bought this dvd burner and installed it into my computer (I have an old Asus A8V mobo). Anyways so far the drive seems to be able to burn media fine. But when it comes to reading dvd's, audio cd's, it just skips. It can read them it is just skipping so badly to the point where the dvd's are unwatchable and cd's skip rather bad. I have deleted my upper and lower filters already does anybody know what I can do? I'm pretty sure I have the latest firmware as well.

I found this on a website:

This is what mine displays (Out of date nero but oh well):

Notice that mine is only saying x16 read speed?

it does not say his reads nor writes to BD, want my glasses hennessy? sounds like the problem is you're using Nero 1st off, I'd recommend CDBurnerXP instead.

It has nothing to do with the software. The drive literally can not read cd/dvd's. DVD's skip badly and I get a weird error like cyclic redundancy check when i try to extract files from a cd. I've downloaded the latest raid drivers so I dont know what it could be.

Vincent, for the drive to operate in windows or any OS, it needs drivers and software, and Nero can royally screw up a system and make perfectly good drives useless.

I've installed the drivers and have tried different software. My "My Computer" should be displaying DVD+-R/RW DL Recorder and it's displaying DVD-RAM Recorder. I think there could be a problem there. Also when I try to install new firmware or even try the older firmware from samsungs website it just says there was an error. I'll try getting rid of nero and try CDBurnerXP

Ok, nero uninstalled. I uninstalled the drive from device manager and shut down the computer and even switched sata ports. Booted back up and same problem. Interesting thing to note: when I try to install the new firmware it says ""This firmware is not compatible with the selected drive." even thought I know it is...

you can not just uninstall NERo, it takes a lot more to totally remove anything it leaves when you uninstall it. I bet I could install the drive and it'd work perfectly on my system

NERO was never installed ever on the XP 64? when you installed the drive, was the IDE cable the one that came with it or one already in the system?

It is a SATA drive. And the cable came with it. I've tried both ports on the motherboard. And an interesting thing to note is that when I try to upgrade/downgrade the firmware it tells me that "The firmware is not compatible with the selected drive."

I've used the firmware from samsungs website, third party websites, and even tried its live update program. All yield the same error message.

Most DVD burners work with seperate heads for reading and writing. It is perfectly reasonable that one of the heads is functional and one is not. This would explain why you can burn fine but have trouble reading data.
