anyway, it is cool. i need to install acronis and make an image of the current hdd that is in there before i start messing with ubuntu

That's why I suggested the LiveCDs, as long as you have a writable data drive to store the file on the sftp server you don't have to worry about partitioning or anything just to do the speed tests.
