SFF questions

We are looking into getting some SFF PCs at work, and I had a couple of questions about them. We are planning to get either the HP dx5150 or the dx5100.

Would it be ok to set a 19" CRT on them? Also, can they be used vertically, or do they have to be lying flat? We are leasing them, so even if they will function like this but we're not supposed to use them like that, then we don't want to risk breaking our lease agreement. I can ask our vendor these questions as well, but I'd rather be a little more informed before talking to him. In other words, I'd rather sound ignorant to you guys than to him!

Thanks!

I am going to say most likely that you have to keep it as it is in the picture. Given that it is a 5.25 inch rom drive usually means that it will not "clamp" the cd like a laptop does with what is called a slim dvd drive. I am only judging this by the look of the picture. Truthfully, i think there are much better SFF pc's out there. You might want to look into several other options. Doc

Well, our vendor only deals with HP and IBM, and we're trying to get the most pc that we can get for around $700-750. We purchased the dx5100 microtower last time, but our computers are just sitting on the floor, and the owner doesn't like that. I thought that going SFF would make it easier to get them off the floor. Most people in our office have a 19" CRT with a platform thing under it. So for most of them setting their monitor on the SFF would work (as long as that's ok to do). However, there are several people who don't use the platform for their monitor but also don't have room on their desk for either an SFF lying flat or a tower.

We have about a week before we will order the systems, so we need to decide soon what we should order. All the systems will be the same configuration.

Well if that is all you can do then that is all you can do. You could very easily place a lcd monitor on top of the hp machine, but i am not sure about a 19inch crt. I personally would not do it. I'm suprised HP does not sell something a little more versatile. You can make a descent (office working system) with the options available from a sempron. Obviously if you have a contract with a vendor then looking elsewhere would be quite improbable. Good luck bud. Doc

Have you looked at the HP's? physically? some of them have a vent on the top of the case, which makes for a crappy solution when plopping a CRT or TFT on top. Plus the cases tend to be plastic for HP...... not good for a heavy CRT.

THe IBM's/Lenovo's are all steel and are certified to hold up to a 22" CRT.....and vent from front to back. They are having a fire sale on their M51's, not sure if they have a ton of them in SFF's or not, but it's worth checking.
