SFC asking for wrong Windows CD

I never had these problems with my older PC, which had less than half the CPU power, half the RAM (a much slower form, too), and minimal PSU and video card. In fact I got a more powerful machine specifically to do video editing without worrying if the equipment will be up to the task.

I've tried Power Director 4, VideoWave 5, Windows Movie Maker and WinDVD Creator 2. All without success. Power Director seemed to be going to work OK and it was the first one I tried, but after one failure due to wrongly connected RCA cables the next time I tried it the program refused to even OPEN for me, so I uninstalled it, uninstalled the capture device drivers and the device itself, then reinstalled everything and tried again. Same result.

So next I tried WinDVD Creator 2. Couldn't make a capture work there either - first effort froze at 3:26 and second effort after uninstalling and reinstalling it froze at :17.

Then I tried Windows Movie Maker and managed to copy an hour and thirty five minutes of VHS tape to the hard drive in one go. It came out perfect!

But the very next day when I tried to do it again with another tape, WMM froze during the selection of the capture quality and simply would not shut down. In fact the whole PC refused to shut down.

I made several more attempts with WMM with the same result - hard freeze. So I tried installing my old standby, VideoWave 5, and it froze during capture. Tried it again and same thing happened.

Then I decided to try updating the video card driver. It made no difference.

I am about ready to admit defeat and just do a fresh install of Windows XP and try again but thought before taking such a drastic step I might find some help over here.

There is no malware of any kind on this puter. I've scanned it forty ways from Sunday.

Can anyone help please?

Not yet, but I will. I hadn't thought of doing this at first or the video card drivers either because WMM worked one day then froze the next and I had made no changes to the setup during that short interval.

I hasten to add that I had Norton auto-protect disabled during all the installs and capture efforts.

I'll experiment with video capture again after updating the chipsets and report back but my sense is that it's not going to solve the issue, just as updating the video card driver did nothing.

Meanwhile if anyone else has any ideas I'd sure appreciate hearing them.

I updated the VIA drivers and that did not solve the issue. So I decided to check the system files. I'm getting more certain that a reinstall of Windows will be required.

BTW this is not the first time I've used sfc on this installation. The first time all the files were OK and it never asked me to insert the CD. This time it is asking me to insert a CD that I do not have.

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now." Clicking the "Details" button informs me that I have the wrong CD. Which I don't....

I have Windows XP Home SP2, not Professional. Why doesn't sfc know that?
