Just be sure NOT to use a cylinder of sulfuryl fluoride. (Vikane) You only make this mistake once. (unless you believe in after life)

In any case if you must sound deep you can use a variety of electronic devices to do this and keep yourself safe. 🙂

The biggest problem with SF6 is the fact that unlike helium it tends to pool up so to speak. Over time, it will all come out, however, it is harder to get it out.

By that, I mean that SF6 is more dense then air, so it heads to the bottom of the lungs, where as helium will head to the top and out.

It actually sounds fairly safe.

NFPA Ratings:
Health = 1
Flammability = 0
Reactivity = 0

HMIS Ratings:
Health = 0
Flammability = 0
Reactivity = 0

Sounds quite benign.

It's also got an OSHA PEL of 1000 ppm and ACGIH TLV of 1000 ppm. "Inert" is relative. I wouldn't feel comfortable inhaling this stuff.

Anecdote: My high school physics teacher (about a billion years ago) once told us a story about another teacher who inhaled a heavier than air gas (although I don't remember which gas) in order to demonstrate the deeper voice properties, just like these radio guys.

Afterwards, he kept passing out, and they brought him to the hospital. It turned out that the gas had built up in his lungs, and was displacing oxygen. So they turned him upside down for awhile and that cleared him out.

True story. At least the part about my physics teacher telling us about it. 😉

IIRC things sounded deep and echoey on freon...it wasn't that one's actual voice dropped....however that's like 20+ years ago.

This mix should never really be joked about even. The really dangerous one is a lot of ammonia added to bleach or vice versa, they are both explosive.

Many janitors that worked for years with both chemicals have died thinking the two combined would be better.

People assume clorine being so nearly unreactive is 'safe'...actually it's really the opposite. Clorine has 7 of the 8 electrons it needs to be totally stable....it will fucking rip apart compounds to get it's 8th of the matching set.

This is what makes it a very good human (and other life form) killer.
