SF heads - ? on Tenderloin area

SF peeps please explain - if the tenderloin is supposedly so ghetto how is the north eastern edge of it teeming with such high quality (ie $200++/night) hotels? is the tenderloin (or at least the edges of it) massively gentrified now? or has the perception always been wrong?

Looking at the map below, basically is southwest of O'Farrrel/Jones = ghetto and north/east of it = not ghetto?

They're on the edge. Exit hotel, walk one direction, awesome stuff, walk other direction, poop in the streets.

Thing is, SF really isn't all that big, and it's awash in money. The "ghetto" parts are constantly getting squished closer together.

Also, it's what the market will bear. You can't find a hotel under $150 a night unless you go waaaaay the hell out.

I had a lock on courtyard somewhere in that map area for $134. Blinked and it went up $25, so I settled for a $160/night somewhere in the north eastern quadrant of that map area.

Hopefully you got your affairs in order, no?

This basically. Though crap is generally the least of my concerns in the Tenderloin.

There are a lot of great bars and restaurants in the Tenderloin as well.

Crap should be your worry when in the Tenderloin, watch where you step!!!

Used needles are more my concern. Not getting between a pimp and his working staff is more my concern. The knife wielding drunk is more my concern. The mentally unstable person trying to set on fire and push old ladies out in to traffic is more my concern (recently happened).

Shit washes off.

Yes and it's worth a visit if you're at all into cocktails. If you can't get a res or walk in the nearby Tradition (from the same people) is good also.

Thanks. I'll make a res now

Re: tenderloin

As a downtown la/Hollywood vet, none of that surprises or scares me. So I think I'm okay.

yeah it really isn't worse than that.

...friend of mine did have someone bleed-out on the doorstep of her building one night, though. YMMV
