Sexual discrimination in Israel

This is not meant to be an anti-Israel thread. If this situation happened anywhere in the world, I would still post it for discussion.

Woman in military uniform gets on bus.

Bus is in an Ultra-Orthodox section of city.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish man complains about woman sitting in front of bus. Women are supposed to sit in back of bus.

Police are called, man is arrested.

After being arrested, it comes out that the man is 45 years old, has 12 children, and no paying job.

Where does someone that has no paying job, have the right to complain about a woman serving in the military sitting in the front of the bus?

Interesting article about how Israel is in conflict with itself.

Its amazing (to me at least) that stuff like this still happens in the 21st century.

Not surprisingly, assholes are everywhere, not just in Israel.

That's pretty harmless compared to the atrocities done in other parts of the Middle East against women.

😵 You didn't read your own post did you?

Bigot getting dealt with is a GOOD thing. What, you're aghast that he even exists? In that case you've no understanding of human nature. Consider it a blessing that the man did not have the full backing of his state.

In other countries TODAY that woman might have been stoned to death for the audacity of upsetting a male.

The reason there is some conflict over religion in Israel - more so perhaps than other first world nations - is that Israel is polarized between orthodox Jews and a large block of atheists/agnostics (about one third of the population which is a staggeringly high number). It isn't like in the US where most people are non-fundie or "moderate" theists. They have those as well, but when you get significant numbers of people at each opposite extreme, you're going to see some conflict.

The issue is with a narrow margin of radical ultra-orthodox types. It's comparable to Islam, minus the whole suicide-bombers crap. A tiny number of a fundamentalist sect isn't content to push their beliefs on their own families, they want the rest of society to follow their ideas.

What? A Jewish government that actually punishes Jewish wrongdoers? That's impossible, Israel only do bad things to people.

Israel has the same problem of permanent welfare class gradually ruining society as Europe and America does. The only difference is in America it is still considered shameful to be a leech. In Israel the welfare leeches think it is an honor to be a leech and it is everyone else's duty to provide for them.

Separation of men and woman in religious worship has always been a tenet of the Jewish religion. But still, its a religious choice, as nearly all religions have their quaint and curious customs.

My only other comment is that as the Israeli government of Bozo Netanyuhu goes off the deep end, its only extreme right wing Jews who are pushing more extreme views in terms of discrimination against females. Other wise, Israel had a very good human rights record in terms of being inclusive of females into national life and politics. As Golda Mier
was elected Israeli PM. And females serve in the Israeli Military in both non-combat and combat roles.

It somewhat human nature, when a people and a religion are put under interational stress, there are always conservatibe elements who want to retreat into ancient traditions. It partly explains the Taliban and now starts to explain extreme right wing Israeli Jews.

But what about the puppies??

*A rabbinical court in Jerusalem has sentenced a dog to stoning, according to Behadrei Hadarim, a Hebrew website for ultra-Orthodox Jews. The sentencing came after a large dog wandered into the Monetary Affairs Court in the neighborhood of Mea Shearim.

From ynetnews.com: "The dog scared the court's visitors and, to their surprise, refused to leave even after they attempted to drive him away."

The stubborn mutt reminded one of the judges of an incident from 20 years earlier: "[A] famous secular lawyer who insulted the court was cursed by the panel of judges, who wished that his spirit would move on to the body of a dog...The lawyer passed away several years ago."

The report goes on to say that one of the judges then ordered "the children outside to throw stones at him in order to drive him away." The court now denies the story. The dog escaped unharmed. *

😉

Even though this forum likes to concentrate on the Israel/Pal issue, the big issue inside Israel is about the political power held by the ultras and the settlers parties.
Once these guys take over and get their way, it's going to be a whole different ballgame

Could you imagine the uproar in the states if a man on welfare complained about a woman in the military sitting in the front of the bus?

You do not work, mooch off the system, and then think you are entitled to certain privileges over those that serve the nation?

But that's the way most of the Jews here will view it.
Haven't you started getting any pms telling you to lay off yet?

Nope, no PMs,,, yet.

How can a first world nation excuse someone on welfare complaining about a woman sitting at the front of the bus?

If anything, the man should be ashamed of not having a job to support his 12 kids. In Texas, we call those kinds of people dead beat dads.

Israel is theirs, and theirs alone, God told them.
God also told them to have those kids.
God told them women shouldn't even be on the bus period, you know where they belong.

Most people there have been dong this for along time.
When the Ultras go on one of their marches through the city, folks usually just close the curtains and eat popcorn till its over.
If that were to happen here, people would be throwing fits.

Israel is theirs, and theirs alone, God told them.

No, the UN told them in 1948.

The only reason why the ultra orthodox Jews have political sway in the Knesset is because of the multi-party parliament system. The major parties need a coalition to remain in control and are willing to pay favors to get them.

Israel also has Russian Jews that eat pork: http://www.thejc.com/lifestyle/food/how-holy-land-got-a-pork-habit They get hate from the Ultra Orthodox as well.

My fav; Ultra Orthodox Jews spitting on an 8 year old girl - http://content.usatoday.com/communi...-is-target-of-ultra-orthodox-jews-in-israel/1

Naama Margolese, 8, whose family is from Chicago, says she is afraid of walking to her religious Jewish girls school for fear of extremists who have spat on her and called her a whore for dressing "immodestly." She tells the AP: "They were scary. They don't want us to go to the school."
If it wasn't for the Palestinians and constant terrorist threat, Israel would rip itself apart.

No, the UN told them in 1948.

I do have that wrong don't I.
Didn't God tell the Jews to go wander in the desert till this all passes over?

Do the Ultras believe they are the only Jews suppose to be there, or do they believe they dont belong there either

I want to give you credit OP. You prefaced that you would bring this up no matter where in the world it happened. Unlike some here wouldnt give a damn if it happened anywhere else in the world, and would only bring it up because they dislike Israel. That being said, I believe sexual discrimination is flat out disgusting. btw, I see that already there are anti-israel trollers trying to derail this thread and make this thread about something else. Ashame....

Why is THIS news when Women in Saudi Arabia are not even allowed to drive a car ?

And as bad as some Jews are in Israel towards women, they are like saints compared to Muslims for the most part. I bet Israel has more women in its Government than the Palestinians have and for that matter, other Arab countries combined.

Because Israel is suppose to be the shining star of democracy and freedom in the Middle East.

Thank you.

If this story happened in Houston Texas, I could just imagine what the news would say about a dead beat dad on welfare giving a woman serving in the military a hard time.

My personal opinion, parents should be responsible for caring for the children. Religion and laziness is no excuse not to work.

As I have posted in this forum before, there is a difference between "can not" and "will not". When you someone that "will not" provide for their family, that person is nothing more then a parasite on society.

A few months ago I had to go back to the child support office for a review. It had probably been 6 or 7 years since my last review. There were men in there that had no jobs and owed anywhere from $6,000 - $100,000 in back support. Some of them were arrested right then and hauled off to jail.

How can society point at one person and say "its ok, you do not have to support your children", then point at another person and say "you are a dead beat dad".

Because we expect to read about this kind of thing to come out of Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Separation of men and woman in religious worship has always been a tenet of the Jewish religion. But still, its a religious choice, as nearly all religions have their quaint and curious customs.

Separation in prayers is very much a choice (though the majority of worshiping Jews pray in non-segregated environments). What's more concerning has been a recent push of Haredi gender ideas into more secular environments (such as buses in both Israel and Brooklyn and public walkways in front of Synagogues). The Israeli government in particular is reluctant to enforce it's own equality laws on these groups for fear of offending the significant Haredi population.

It somewhat human nature, when a people and a religion are put under interational stress, there are always conservatibe elements who want to retreat into ancient traditions. It partly explains the Taliban and now starts to explain extreme right wing Israeli Jews.

It also explains the cyclical political pressure in America from Christian Evangelicals. I'm not lumping all of these groups together as being "the same", but rather that they face a similar set of pressures, and their responses have common traits.
