My parent's neighborhood is based around a lake, it's a private lake and was developed in the past 10-20 years so the houses are newer and most houses have quite a bit of lake frontage compared to the neighboring lakes.
Anyways, I went home this past weekend to spend the weekend out on the lake with some of my friends. I get home and my parents tell me I shouldn't go swimming in the lake for a few weeks, or maybe not the rest of the summer.
Last week 140,000 Gallons of raw sewage was "pumped" into the lake because the sewage pump that pumps the sewage from our neighborhood to the city-run lines had a pipe burst and it went un-noticed for two hours as all the sewage leaked into the storm sewers.
The E. Coli levels were about 20x higher than what is considered safe to go swimming in. Not to mention the lake is pretty shallow so it probably is just getting worse because of how warm the water is this time of year. The health department said it was fine after 3 or so days, but there are parts of the lake that are still pretty cloudy. It's gross.
It was the first time I've seen the lake with no boats on it (besides pontoons) on a weekend during august.
