may not be the place to post this...but i have no where else to turn....and i don't know what to do. perhaps someone else has had this happen to them.

my problem....my computer has slowed down soooooo much since when i got it.

my computer is very fast, intel 2.4, 1gb ram, 7200rpm 111 gb hd, etc. so i know it is not my base hardware. i have defragmented my disk, run norton system works for viruses, organization, problems, basically everything systemworks can do. i have cleared out all my unnecessary files, and now have 60 of my 111gb of hd free.

my computer has slowed down so much that i can't even play a dv file with out it playing slowoly and skipping all over, i also cant capture with a preview. i have tried everything i can think of. when in after effects, it takes me like 2 mins when i start a ram preview before it even begins.

has anyone experienced something like this? i am just stuck and on't know what to do.

on startup i have 24 processes running, any ideas?
thanks
tom

either your HD is dying or you have a virus that is not getting picked up by Norton. I would probably back up your stuff and reinstall Windows. If it's still slow after that replace your HD.

hi,
welcome to the forums, hopefully we can help you out.
this type of problem could be many things. to begin with, what operating system are you using?
things to check are:

spyware - try using spybot and adaware to check for and remove spyware
is dma enabled for your ide devices?
are your chipset drivers and other software up to date and patched?
are you getting any errors in event viewer?
is your hd starting to give errors? check it with manufacturer software.

hopefully this will get you started.

good luck

Once you tell us what operating system you're using, it will be much easier to help.

OS?
Use a Norton rescue disk to check for virii that are hiding themselves in your environment.
Spyware?
Any crapola loading at startup? Seems like every app loads something into memory during startup nowadays.

since he says 24 processes, I'd guess WinXP. unless he means programs, so it could be anything.

You can check and disable startup programs from your registry here: HLKM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN. But only do this if you know how to work with the registry.
I would run a trojan scan like the cleaner.
One sure way to speed things up is to run a HDD Manufacturer's diagnostic utility to do a low level format on your HDD and then clean install windows.
