In case anyone else with a Linksys router is monitoring this post, here is Linksys's response to my email:

Thank you for contacting Linksys Customer Support.

In using MSN Messenger behind the router, uninstall any personal firewall programs such as BlackIce, Norton Internet Security, etc.
Forward ports 6891-6900 to enable File send
Forward port 6901 to enable voice communications

Note: disable SPI and Block WAN Request as these will cancel all forwarding attempts

IN TCP 6891 - 6900
IN TCP 1863
IN UDP 1863
IN UDP 5190
IN UDP 6901
IN TCP 6901

If you're using an old firmware, you may want to upgrade to a newer one.

If you still experience unstable connectivity even after flashing the latest firmware, it is expected to be addressed in the next firmware release. We are continuously doing tests regarding MSN Messenger applications behind the router.

I have also attached a document regarding Port Forwarding.

If you have further questions, please feel free to send an eMail
to support@linksys.com or contact us at (800) 326-7114 so that
we may further assist you.

I have followed their instructions for setting up a static IP on my desktop, but I have run into a problem. @Home (Now Insight@Home) did not give me a DNS number... they also will not help me out with any of this because they say they don't support the use of a router (and you wonder why they are going out of business). Anyhow, any help?

With WindowsXP, go in your "My Network Places"....then "view network connections" right click on "Local Area Connection" click status, then "support tab" then "details"....that'll give ya DNS Servers.
Boy, I'm kinda new to XP, don't know any shortcuts yet....but with Windows98 you used to type in "winipcfg " in the run box but for some reason can't with XP.....hope that is of some help to you.

In Windows 98/2000/XP, you can also go to the dos prompt and type ipconfig /all

I think there's an update for Instant messenger in WinXP.
Check the Windows Update site.
Maybe it would apply to your problem.
:)
