Sever Build- I need help

I'm currently in the process of creating this masterpiece and wanted to get a few opinions/remarks from my fellow builders out there that live for this sport, such as myself.


for starters i'm going to use this case

now here's where the problem starts i'm not sure on which processor/motherboard i want to go with. i'm def leaning intel.
what do you guys suggest? let me know what you think about this beast i plan on releasing to the world. feedback appreciated.

Great case , I have one also. I just ordered a second 4 in 3 hd device.
Why have removable hd's ??
You know that you can put a 2nd power supply in that case also..

What are you trying to configure ? Raid ?? If so you'll need a ide raid controller.. look at 3Ware's offerings.

If you do a raid system , ie raid 5 then get a mobo w/ a 64bit pci slot.

For a P4 single processor mobo w/ 64bit pci-x :

You do know that case comes w/ a 4 in 3 hd cage , just buy a 2nd for $29. You could put 8 drives w/ great cooling: here's a link:

That's so overkill for a fileserver. (If you're referring to the Dual 248 box) It's a sweet machine, but doesn't really fit the bill for fileserving use.

Unless you've got GbE and Cat5E/6 connecting this thing to your network, your bottleneck is the ethernet connection. Hell, a Pentium 1 powered box housing a single 7200RPM drive (maybe even 5400RPM) would saturate 100mbit.

My god, your rig should saturate even GbE easily. (I didn't realize you had 5x drives in RAID 0...)

You ougtta eliminate your fileserving bottleneck: do the right thing and donate a few of those drives to charity- like me. =)

Or, you know, going to 10Gb. Of course, 5 drives in RAID 0 is a really, really bad idea for a file server. Look! I more than quintuple my chances of a catastrophic failure! Whee! If you have 5 drives, you should be going RAID 5 or 3+0.

Nothing wrong with going Intel. IMX, an Intel processor on an Intel mobo is as rock solid and reliable as they come. This is not even an option for AMD.

If it's for a fileserver, I'd lean towards a Tyan, Intel, or Supermicro motherboard, and then the cheapest processor you can find for said board.
Fileserving will not be bottlenecked by processor speed, so you won't have an issue with that.
It won't need a terrible lot of memory either, so long as it's just serving files.

Case...whatever you like, and that Antec looks fine for the PSU.
By the way, why not go with hotswapable S-ATA drives?

3Ware makes drive cages for ATA drives, they use three 5,25" slots and take 4 3,5" drives each.
They work very well IMO.
