Setup

I plan on reformatting my WD 20.5 GB later this week. I plan on creating two partitions also. C: will be about 3GB and D: will be what is left. I will most likely use FDISK for this.

Here is the question: When setting up windows 98 se for use with a ATX power supply, do I have to set any special parameters when starting setup.exe?

ie: setup /s

Is there any thing special I should be looking out for here?
This is my first time setting up with an ATX ps. I changed this over from a AT ps.

Specs:
503+ with K6-3+ 450@500
WD20.5 GB HD
V3 3000 AGP
Vortex2 PCI

What about this "setup/p j"? This is only for Windows 98 and above, I believe. My motherboard manual(rev A5) for the VA-503+ rev1.2a says to set that parameter for use with ACPI functions instead of APM, PnP mode?

ref. - ACPI - Advanced Configuration Power Interface

Questions? Comments?

I've set-up numerous Win98 machines from fresh hard drive formats - all I've ever done is type "setup.exe". You really shouldn't have to use switches to configure the Win98 setup program.

However, there might be specific issues with your motherboard that would require the use of specialized switches. I just know that I have never experienced anything like that.

Well I reloaded my Win98 SE last night.

I used the EZ-Install program from Western Digital to repartition and format the hard drive into two drives. It took all of 5 min., maybe 10 top. WOW was that easy and fast.

Next I booted off the CD right into system setup. That was too easy. It took about 40 to 45 min. to setup.

After setup was done, I looked the system registery and noticed the ACPI features where loaded. That just makes me wonder why and how it knew to do that?

The system still has the shut down problem. Will trouble shoot that this week end.

I have Windows 98 SE and it will not shut down properly.
1. chose start button, pick logout?( first button up), pick shutdown. Computer hangs.
2. chose start button, pick logout?( first button up), pick restart. computer restarts

You know that problem MS issued that patch for.

There is a site I got off another thread that tells how to troubleshoot the problem with or without the patch.

the link is here -->> http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm

I think it is related to my cpu (K6-3+) some how. Since I have put it in, the OS has never shut down properly. It will always hang.

I'll find the solution.

I had a problem like that once and the fix was easy...just disabling the Windows Shutdown sound (Control Panel/Sounds). There is a shortcut you can create on your desktop, too, that should shutdown windows OK:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE USER.EXE,EXITWINDOWS

Call it "Shutdown" or something like that and doubleclick it when you're ready to exit.
