I'm trying to put together a cheap, web surfing, email computer for the family with some old computer parts and i'm running in to trouble.
Parts I had:
athlon xp 2000+
dvd rom
antec 380 truepower
cdrw drive
geforce fx 5700
WD 300db 30 gig hd
parts i bought,
512 mb corsair valueram
gigabyte 2004rz via kt 600 motherboard
my problem is the computer would post, then go into windows setup, but once it loads the preliminary files and before i setup the hd partitions for installation, the screen goes out. the monitor goes into standby mode and i no longer have any picture. when i reset the computer, the post screen doesn't even come up anymore. i tried another geforce ti4200 that i know works but still the same thing happens. i've tried using some ram for my current rig and it doesn't help. I tried using one of my back up HDs as well to no avail. The only thing I haven't tried is getting another processor but i don't wanna buy another processor unless i'm sure that is the problem, which i am not. Does anybody know whats wrong with my setup?? I've never encountered such a weird problem. It's mostly video / display related but i've tried two motherboards and two graphics card in different combos and the same problem persisits. What gives?
