Setup Win/Linux dual boot before or after overclock?

Hey guys, I'm about to setup a new system in the next day or so. It'll have a P4 1.8A and I can probably OC it to 2.7-2.8GHz. I want to setup a Win98/Linux dual boot, but I'm not sure if I need to install Linux before I overclock it, or if Linux can wait until after I overclock it.

Be ready to clock it back down either way, Linux is a lot more sensitive to overclocking than Windows is.

Well, look at it this way, it's not like Linux somehow detects that you have a X GHz CPU and begins screwign up if you run it higher, so if Linux craps out due to overclocking, then it's not really stable.
So run it at whatever you want, but if Linux craps out, then works when you lower the clock, then it wasn't really stable at all.

Good stability test 🙂

2.6-2.7? You surely are an optimist 🙂

Anyways, I clocked my 1.6 -> 2.5 and installed both windows AND linux and I haven't had any problems in either since. I guess it's really the luck of the draw. Try it and see if it works. The worst thing that can happen is you clock it back down and possibly install again.

installing an OS is strenous on the system too.. its a good test to see if you overclock is stable... if it wont load the OS, then back it down.

I'd probably recommend installing Gentoo and a really good test of the overclock

Thanks for the info guys.

Well, THUGSROOK over in the OC forum OC'd his 1.8A to 2.6 on default voltage and 2.7 on 1.7v vcore, and my chip specs match his exactly, so yeah, I'm feeling optimistic 😀 I'll probably take my CPU up to 1.7 just to see what it will do, but I will probably clock it back down to default if I only get a 100MHz improvement with increased voltage.
