this is the error i always get after the first reboot when i try to install 2k. i do a search on my computer as well as on the 2k cd for the file and it finds nothing.. i'm upgrading from 98 by the way, full install gets the same error.

could someone with a 2k box do a search for the file ntkrnlemp.exe and tell me what it is, if they have it?

What is your motherboard, harddrive and other device? I've searched my harddrive but could not find ntkmlemp.exe The closes think I could find is ntkmlmp.exe found in WINNT\system32\dllcache.

Usually, after a reboot, Windows 2000 will not continue if the harddrive is attached to the ATA-66 from Hotpoint. This is due to the fact that the driver for the controller was not fully loaded. If this is your case, simply attached your harddrive to the ATA-33 interface, install Windows 2000 and the ATA-66 driver (make sure that there's no unknown device in your device manager.) the reconnect the harddrive back to ATA-66 after you shutdown.

ahh that might easily be it. its a tiger motherboard with a western digital 10 gig hard drive.. how would i attatch the drive to that ata-33 interface? is this something i need to do physically, or in the bios or what?

oh yeah, i have a few unknown devices that i disabled in device manager but are integrated components on the motherboard that i dont use. (audio, video) do i need to disable them with the jumpers, or will just the device manager disabling suffice?

hmm so i got the unknown devices taken care of, now the only thing impeding my progress is the ata-66/33 thing. lets hope so anyway.. anyone else care to answer, how i would switch from 66 to 33?

thanks

1. search for ntk*.*
2. what do you mean, attach the hard drive. hook up the ribbon cable?
3. ata 33/66: what h/d controller? did you press f6 when setup first started, to load 3rd party drivers? is your hardware natively supported by windows? (i'm not familiar with your motherboard)
4. disable all those devices you don't use with the jumpers, or in the bios perhaps.
5. you also need to configure your h/d in bios, or at least make sure it's set to autodetect.
6. your h/d should work just fine at 33. mine does. you also need an 80 pin ribbon cable for ata66. (be sure you get a good one, mine sux, i lost it)

7. always give your full system specs when asking for help with your system.

edit

that says F6 up there on #3
