Setup cannot copy file clbcatq.dl_ while repairing WinXP SP2

I just bought a genuine key for a client for WinXP and entered it. It took fine, but it failed to install the latest updates from Windows update. So, I decided to repair it by booting from the CD and repairing windows by selecting Repair after I selected to install Windows.

It was going fine until I got the error that Setup could not copy the file setup clbcatq.dl_. It's in the folder i386 on the WinXP CD. I tried cleaning the CD (even though it is brand new), tried the DVD-ROM instead of the CD-RW, tried another WinXP CD, all to no avail.

Any ideas?

Can I skip the installation of this file or is it vital? If it's vital, what do you suggest?

Thanks.

It's ok to skip it, and you may receive other notifications as well during the repair.

OK. Thanks. I actually was told to put the system back to factory default settings (it was overclocked), and that allowed me to get farther. I was then advised to test the RAM, and I found a bad stick. Taking it out allowed me to get farther, but it still did the same thing with another file. I will not try skipping all of the files that it has trouble copying. Thanks.

Btw, why would it have trouble copying them?

Did that. Now I can't log in because it says that I have to activate Windows before I do so, and it can't connect to the Net for some reason. And, of course, I can't get log in to fix it. I'll try to boot in Safe Mode. If there are any other remedies for this besides waiting until to Monday to activate it over the phone, let me know. Thanks.

You're in something of a Catch-22. The files that could not be copied were no doubt not present on the XP CD. They were most probably driver files from drivers that you installed in XP yourself or during updates. These are not on the original CD.

One solution would be to find your modem driver and put the files on a CD (or floppy if they fit). Run the repair and direct setup to your CD or floppy when the driver files are needed. Activation can proceed once the modem drivers are present.

It may be possible to install them in Safe Mode without another repair installation.
