What is it? Why is it so popular?

I understand it's some sort of board game. Would someone care to share the intricacies of why it is so highly rated with me?

A strategy board game where you try to settle as much land as possible. Best with 4 players and at least the seafarers expansion. Personally add seafarers and cities and knights expansion. Worth the investment... if you actively play board games with 4 players then yes. The 5-6 player expansion sucks though.

settlers is a great strategy game. you have resource tiles that you build towns or cities on and you build roads between them. each roll gets some resources to build with. you can trade and make deals. you win by collecting victory cards such as longest road.

I picked up Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, and Dominion this week. The first two are casual board games that focus on strategic plotting of land or routes. Very easy to pick up, and lots of replay. Dominion is a deck builder card game that is a lot of fun. I usually play that once a week with friends. Finally broke down and bought my own set.

These games are a lot more causal than something like monopoly. A round can be played in as little as 30 minutes. I think Settlers is a little longer, although I haven't played that one personally. But they do offer some very fun strategy that isn't entirely stale from round to round.

Even with a group of experienced players, I don't like "rushing" through board games. Settlers will take 45-60 minutes simply due to the game mechanics. Last week, my group played through some Dominion (great game) and then a fun card game called Fluxx. Fluxx is HILARIOUS and can last anywhere from 5-60 minutes.

Settlers is easy to learn, has player interaction, and randomness with rolls without it being too random that you can't develop a strategy.

It is a lot of fun. I'd probably give it a 8/10 or so. When I first started playing I probably would have given it a 9/10 but after I started getting more heavily into board games I now like a little more depth. But for a casual gamer it is probably a 9/10.

If you have to buy it to play it, it sounds like you don't know anyone who likes to play. I'd guess you won't enjoy it w/o friends who want to play.

I agree with you on the cities & knights but seafarers was really not as good as all it really added was the ability to make islands and then it was the same thing as the original.

It never felt right settling on Catan. In order to settle properly, you have to have indigenous peoples to oppress.

That's what makes it a fun casual game. A game with no randomness is a game that's based entirely on skill. That's not a bad thing in and of itself, but that means the same person is likely to win every time as they are the most skilled. Randomness is a buffer against player skill; it allows mismatched groups of people to play together and still have a good time, which is what you're going for in a casual game.

I guess it depends what rules you played with. We often played using "uncharted lands" as a rule. So all islands were a crapshoot. added more mystery to seafarers. Throw a gold, ore, and desert out there to make it interesting.
