Settle a bet, what is 'higher end', Ford or Mercury?

I was hanging with some friends when this discussion came up. I thought that Mercury was higher then Ford, just like Acura is higher then Honda, etc, but everyone else thought it was the opposite. Can anyone solve this for me?

It's pretty much the same. No real distinctive differences, just mostly a rebadge. I guess it could be considered "higher end" than Ford though

I think 40 to 50 years ago Mercury was a more premium brand than Ford but since the 70's Mercurys have been just a rebranded Ford.

mercury is usually a bit more trimmed out than a ford.

Yea, that was the impression i was under, and of course, Lincoln is the luxury line at the top of that chain.

Lincoln is really the luxury brand, but I would say Mercury might be a tad bit higher end than a ford.

Wow, 10 replies in like 10 minutes! Thanks guys. Oh, BTW, I am not a fan of EITHER car. If I had to drive an american car it would be from GM, but that's not saying much. I cannot think of a Ford product I would want, but at least I won the bet...

but ford has better SUV's....wtf...i've been inside a mountaineer...it's one POS SUV....no leg room at all in the back, the seats were uncomfy....the ford SUV's are far suprioer in this regard.....and focus > cougar....cougar is a what...a wannabe sports car??....my friend has that car and i really detest it....how is mountaineer "higher end" than explorer...how is cougar "higher end" than focus?....focus is way cooler anyways....i knw ford's sedans are wtf-ish...mercury's no different...the only thing they have going for them is probably the marauder, which i think is coool

EDIT:...i just noticed that cougar's equivalent is the mustang......so erase focus up there...and put in mustang......
