Hi,

I currently have Cable Internet on one of my computers and I would like to set up a wireless connection to another computer so that it can also access the Internet. Would you advice what I need to buy to setup this network? Both computers have PCI slots, one runs on WinXP, the other one on Win98. The cheaper the solution, the better. Thank you for your help!

You'll need a wireless router, and two wireless cards (USB or PCI, though USB ones are sometimes free after rebate). The wireless router shouldn't cost more than 30.

buy two wireless network cards, set them up in ad hoc mode (meaning no AP). once the two comps are communicating, set the one connected to the modem fo share the internet connection. set up the IPs properly (192.168.1.*, subnet 255.255.255.0), and then have one be the gateway for the other one.

thing is, the first computer has to be on for the other to be connected to the internet. This solution will only cost you ~$40, I think, if you go with the old 802.11b cards, which are more than adequate for internet sharing.

*edit*
this solution basically uses the first computer as the router. it's a bit cheaper, but a bit of an inconvenience to need to have the computer connected to the cable modem on for the other one to be able to get online.

wouldn't ThomasV just need one wireless card, as most wireless routers have wired access as well?
