Setting up Windows/Macintosh Home Network

Hello Everyone.... First post here. Thanks for hosting such a wonderful forum with lots of good information!

Yeah, finally catching up with the times and setting up a home network. We are using a cable modem that appears to work fine when a single is connected. We are having problems with setting up a home net through LinkSys 10/100 5 Port Workgroup Switch. The two computers (HP box w/ Windows XP and a Macintosh with G5).

I have some working knowledge of how IP addresses work and how networks theoritcally work, but I am having trouble shooting.

Right now I don't have a lot of info to go on.

A single computer running through the switch seems to work fine. Attach the other the computer and the connection is lost for both. I am hypothesizing that the IP addresses are jumbled up some how.

Anybody have experience with this situation? I don't know that much about Macs. I have tried the IPConfig renew command on the PC, but that doesn't seem to help.

When I find out more info, I will post it. The instructions make it sound like it is plug and play.

Thanks!

The fact that you have both a Mac and a PC isn't your problem.

You can't use a switch to share an Internet connection. You need a router. Or, you need to lease a second IP address from your Cable Modem ISP (if they even offer it, it's an unnecessary expense). Buy a router, attach it to the Cable Modem, and follow the directions that come with it.
