Recently my old web server crashed. We bought a new Dell 1650 poweredge rack mount server using raid 5. I need to know how i setup a web folder and what settings i need to setup so it shares the web pages to my domain name / isp stuff.

You would first have to set up IIS or Apache to start the web server. I haven't worked with Apache, but with IIS, it'll set up an "Inetpub" folder on your C: drive. Your default web folders are in the "wwwroot" folder. You can change that by going in to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services and looking around in there.

You should be able to access your page by typing in your IP address in your web browser. Depending on whether or not you have a router, you might not be able to access the page by typing in your IP address. You can access it by either typing 127.0.0.1 or localhost into the browser. You can get one of the free DNS services to point to your web page so that you can have words instead of numbers to give out for your webpage. I'm using DynDNS and have been happy with them. Others out there are ZoneEdit and No-IP, I think.

Hope this helps.

Make sure all of the OS and IIS related patches are up to date. Then read up on security, checklists, etc., all available at MS Technet.com. Until then do not put the site live. Once you are comfortable with most of the security aspects, then configure your web via the IIS Manager in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools.

By default, all of your web files (a bad thing) will be under C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. It becomes a bit complicated to change this, so we can leave that for now. In the meantime, create a subdirectory under the Inetpub directory called www.yourdomain.com (so you know what resides in that directory for easy reference), and place all your web files in there. Now create the web in the IIS Manger just by right clicking on the icon named after your server (an example here).

Lots more to know and do, but you need to spend some time learning about the IIS service before your should be deploying it live on the Internet, as it will typically become infected with one of many IIS worms, sometimes within minutes, if it is not patched and configured correctly.

Good luck!
