Me and a friend are considering setting up a web server to host websites for a few friends.

We have a 2MBit DSL line and are planning on using RedHat... we've yet to decide on the exact hardware or software setup. Could you please give us some advice on how we should go about setting the server up, any problems we may encounter etc.?

TIA,

That's quite a vague request, but I guess it really depends on what kind of money you want to spend. I have 2 linux boxes, a 2400+ and a 450mhz machine. Both of them are running apache, and honestly the only difference I see when viewing a website from them is about a half second delay with the 450mhz machine.

Now if you're talking about 200 domains you'll be hosting, then maybe you'll need something hefty. But for hosting one website (no sql or anything), a 450mhz machine will do fine.

Now, if you're gonna run Exim, samba and things like that, the faster the better. But for just a simple web server, using apache...you don't really need anything special.

As far as problems you will encounter, I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it :)

Remember to make sure that your ISP's ToS allows you to have a server. Some don't and block off certain ports.
