I have just installed the Red Linux 9 but the default setting of the screen is 800x600 and I want to change to 1024x768.

I am currently using GeForce4Ti4200

Can any pros help me on this?

Thanks a lot!

P.S. I went to "Display settings" to check it out and change the resolution to 1024x768 but when I click "OK" to apply the setting, a screen pop up and say
"Display settings changed

You need to log out and restart the X server for the changes to take effect.
Configuration was written to /etc/X11/XF86Config, original configuration saved as /etc/X11/XF86Config.backup."

So my problem cut to "how to restart the X server for the changes?

Press CTRL + ALT + Backspace. If you have X started by default, you will simply have to re-login, otherwise simply type startx at the commandline.

< EDIT > Make sure you close any open programs first, or you will lose any unsaved work.

It can't be any more specific than that. CTRL +ALT + Backspace shuts down the X server (GUI), and you simply have to restart it (by issuing the command startx.

Re-read:

The login page is not the command line. Do you know what X is? Don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but you should probably start reading. ;)

Push the ctrl button, the alt button, and backspace at the sane time.

Try checking your display properties again and looking for any options that you might not have noticed before, that should have worked.

Sorry leolaw, it really shouldn't be difficult to change the resolution, but it seems that RH9 may make it more difficult than it should.

Since you have X back up (though still in 800x600), find and read the RH-specific documentation that is included for configuring X.

From the RH9 Installation Guide:

To change your X configuration after you have completed the installation, use the X Configuration Tool.

Type the redhat-config-xfree86 command in a shell prompt to launch the X Configuration Tool. If you are not root, it will prompt you for the root password to continue.
