Setting up SETI@HOme -- Not enough memory

I'm following the instructions on how to install SETI@home on my home PC but get the following message when I hit "transmit":

"There is not enough memory available to run this program"

I have 3X256 crucial sticks in my pc, am running Win98se.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I guess I need a memory manager to clean up after myself.

Win9x/me just isn't very good at memory managment, a reboot usually fixes things though! 🙂

Welcome to the TeAm! 😎

It's not you that needs to be cleaned up after, it's WIndows98. 😉

Alright, here's my next poblem.

"cant connect to server"

I assume this is because I'm connecting through a router.
I couldnt find any information on port assignments anywhere
or other threads discussing this.

Like IsOs said, SETI is having problems right now, you can set SetiDriver to Orange Kid's queue though if you need WUs. To use OK's proxy:

<< Select "Proxy Server". Under "Host", enter orangekid.teamanandtech.com. Under "Port", enter 5001. Then click "Save Config" >>

I had it connected and processing, but then the dreaded "not enough memory" re-appeared after I closed and restarted the SETI driver.

I've got 560megs of free RAM.

I had heard that Win98 had problems with this but havent heard of a cure yet.
Does anyone know of one?

Re-booting was fun the first time, but I dont plan on re-booting everytime this happens.

What programs are running in Task Manager? How much memory do you have in Free Resources on a fresh boot?? Try and minimize programs running that you don't use continiously and free up memory- go to start/run/msconfig/start tab and uncheck programs you don't need to run on start-up. My resources are generally 90-91% on a fresh boot. I have Win98 and 512mb of memory. You should not be running out of memory with your setup. I've also had memory errors pop up while starting a program occasionally in the past- uninstall and reinstallation of those applications has cured the woes with them.

I have heard but not confirmed that 98 trips over itself alot like that when it has more than 512 megs of RAM, you may actually want to take some out and see if that helps.

Yes, the Win9x series has some kind of vcache problem with over 512 MB of RAM. I believe there is a registry hack to fix it though.

Thanks Jaws,

I had turned SETI off because it was causing me headaches with that
'not enough memory' message.
I changed the system.ini as per the FAQ and things are fine.

My Seti's back up and running.
