Setting up SBC DSL

So I tried to help my friend set up her DSL from SBC Pacbell today but I had the hardest time. First of all, there was thing called a 2Wire something or other, but I had no idea what it was. So I tried simply to hook up the dsl modem to the computer and phone line and what not, but then I tried to run the cd that came with it and her computer wouldn't run it. So I then tried to get it working on her friend's IMac, but that didn't work. So my question is if it is totally necessary to run that cd on the pc computer in order to get the dsl to work or is there something else I can do. With my dsl back home I didn't have to run any software and it worked fine, but i don't know how Pacbell works.

did you only run 1 cd setup program???..........if i remember right ..you have to run the cd that came with the modem for the drivers .......then you have to run a cd, that i got from pacbell (or online somewhere on there website) for the connection program ........2 diffrent installs......

hmm...there were two cd's but we thought we only had to run one. I forget what the other was for, but i think it was for the 2wire thing. So then is it totally necessary to run those cd's? And does anyone know what that 2wire thing is that i am talking about?

Which modem did your friend get? The external Efficient, or which one? IF it is extrernal, then you might be able to use a simple dial-up network connection to get hooked up, otherwise, you definitely need to install drivers for the DSL modem. -tal

Yeah, the modem is one of the external efficents...I forget the exact number of it, but it was an efficient. And also, the operating system was Windows Millenium, not 98.

Here's a PDF with instructions showing the setup for the Efficient external modem.... BTW, that modem can be "upgraded" possibly to a newer firmware which will give it more features, and the ability to act as a router, rather than just a "dumb" bridge...... if you are interested, there is info at DSLReports.com. Click on the forums and under hardware. Also, they mention the need to obtain a special Flash file... If you can't find it, I may have it laying around some where on my 180 gb's of drive.

I think that PDF file is the same as the intructions that came with the all the stuff. But the main problem that we have is that the person's computer that I'm trying to do this on won't access the cd's. Like the yellow screen comes on and it just sits there. But the cd isn't bad because it does work on another computer. So is there anyway to get around this without having to use the cd?
But I appreciate the links...thanks for the help

IS this an older computer? Cause I would try either downloading the software from SBC if it's available, or copying the contents of the CD to another one. Using TYPE 1 for the new CD. I've had troubles with old cd-rom drives reading particular CD's before. If you've got a spare cd-rom drive around, try hooking it up to access the cd's. I think you're definitely gonna have to install the software though. -TAL
